"A Piece of History Standing Proud in Dubrovnik
Right in the heart of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, just in front of the beautiful Church of St. Blaise, stands Orlando’s Column – and while it may look like just an old statue to some, it’s actually packed with history and meaning.
This medieval stone figure has been standing guard since 1418, symbolizing freedom and independence for the people of Dubrovnik. It’s not just a monument – it was once the official standard for measuring cloth, and today it’s still the spot where the city’s flag proudly flies during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
Take a moment here to soak in the atmosphere: the square around it is lively, often filled with music, tourists, and street performers. It’s one of those places where the past and present blend seamlessly. You don’t need a tour guide to feel its importance – just stand there, look up at Orlando’s brave expression, and you’ll sense it.
A must-see for anyone who wants to connect with the soul of Dubrovnik."

"Unique stone column of an ancient knight Orlando. This important historical figure stands proudly in Dubrovnik for 600 years now, making a year 2019 Orlando’s year. Orlando’s Column was made by Bonino di Jacopo from Milan with the help of the local master Antun Raguseo. The idea to erect the Column was born in 1417, and its construction started two years later. At the knight’s feet, there was the standard for trading fabric the Ragusan cubit (‘lakat’) measuring 51.2 cm. Both the standard and its length correspond to the length of Orlando’s right forearm (the one in which he holds the sword)."
