What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mosor Mountain offers stunning Adriatic views and a rewarding hiking experience, with many appreciating the solitude compared to Split's crowds. However, trails can be challenging and longer than expected, requiring good preparation and sturdy footwear. The weekend-only mountain hut is a highlight for some, but its limited hours mean self-sufficiency is key.
"This is a pretty cool mountain range with multiple little peaks you can hike to. We started our hike down near split but had to cut it short because it started raining and a lot of the trail is actually going from rock to rock and it was getting slippery.
There is also a mountain hut that is open on the weekends where you can stay for the night."

"Perfect location above Split and Kastela bay. Sunset can be spectacular as I will show with pictures. You can sleep here but do check before coming. Every weekend there is host here and it is always nice to spend weekend here. There are many marked mountain paths around and it can be easily reached from village Sitno Gornje directly or via mountain house Umberto Girometta.
I will present here also pictures from very beautiful Mosor peak above Dubrava village called Kozik or Sveti Jure for which locals thought to be highest as difference is very small and it looks very imposing. Beside Dubrava you can reach it from Dugopolje or from other peaks with nice marked mountain trails.
There is also very nice peak Istarska glavica just above Umberto Girometta mountain house with nice view and is very easy to climb."

"I'm not someone who writes reviews on any kind of platform, but for this experience I will make an exception. I agree with most of the reviews concerning the Mosor mountain range, but this review acts as a warning for amateur-hikers. Starting from the parking, it's a 45min walk to the lovely PL. DOM. where you can have a very local meal (we had bean soup with bread and a sausage) and some drinks. After that, you have multiple options to discover the mountain range, where our adventure began. I myself am nowhere near an experienced or professional hiker, but I've done some challenging hiks/walks (vulcano Etna in Sicily, Rila mountain range in Bulgaria). Mosor was very challenging compared to these hikes. We decided to visit the highest point of the mountain range (Veliki Kabal, 1339 meters). From the PL. DOM, this "walk" had an indicated time frame of 1h45 (single trip). The first part (until the actual climb of the mountain range) was perfect for average hikers. All "walks" are also very well indicated, you just follow the red and white dots/stripes painted on the rocks and trees. However, this "walk" was not a path you could follow (starting at the foot of the mountain), but more a literal (and lateral) climb up the mountain from dot to dot. It took us way longer than the indicated timeframe (2h45) without any breaks. Once we reached the very top of the mountain, there was a lot of cold wind. We decided we didn't want to go back the same way, so we continued to Vickov Stup (the red emergency shelter) atop the mountain range. We were literally climbing on the mountain ridge, with strong wind pulling and pushing our bodies (we were still following the red dots as indicators). It was a scary experience. Luckely, we were able to cut the trail about halfway, back to V. Gajna. This climb down was almost as challenging as the climb up, on the same kind of "trail" (climbing from rock to rock). Again the timefraims indicated were far from correct (more than 1h30 extra) and we were very happy to reach PL. DOM again (wich was closed when we arrived there again). We were back at our car at 18h30, it was a very cloudy day so it was starting to get really dark. In the end, this was my biggest concern, to climb back down in the dark.
My final conclusion of this adventurous but scary experience: start early enough, especially if you want to make a loop in the mountain range. Bring warm clothes, a rain jacket and wear long pants. Wear good walking shoes and bring enough water (we brought 3L for 2 people, which was enough). Last but not least, really question your hiking skills. In my opinion, this climb is for (semi-) professionals.
Kind regards

Navigating Mosor's Trails
Key trails include the ascent to Veliki Kabal (1339m), the highest point, offering unparalleled views. The route to the Umberto Girometta mountain hut is popular for its accessibility and the amenities it offers on weekends. Other notable peaks like Kozik (Sveti Jure) and Istarska Glavica provide excellent vantage points and are accessible from various trailheads, including those near Dubrava and Dugopolje.
Hikers should be aware that trail times indicated are often underestimates, especially for more demanding routes. It's advisable to start early, carry a map or GPS device, and inform someone of your hiking plans. The terrain can be slippery when wet, so caution is paramount.
Safety and Preparation
Weather conditions can change rapidly, so packing layers, including a waterproof jacket and long pants, is recommended even on seemingly clear days. Bring ample water (at least 2-3 liters per person) and high-energy snacks, as facilities on the mountain are limited. It's also wise to carry a basic first-aid kit.
For those planning longer or more challenging hikes, especially to the summit, it's crucial to assess your physical condition honestly. Informing someone about your route and expected return time is a good safety practice. In case of emergencies, the Vickov Stup red emergency shelter can offer refuge.

This means that during weekdays, you won't be able to purchase food or drinks there, making it even more critical to bring your own provisions.
