What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Virgin Mary Tree site for its profound spiritual significance and historical importance as a sanctuary for the Holy Family. The well-maintained grounds and peaceful atmosphere contribute to a deeply moving experience, though some note the lack of refreshment vendors on-site.
"The Holy Family spends the most of their travels in Egypt... It embraced the Virgin Mary and her child while soldiers of Herod, King of the Jews (Roman), pursued her with the intention of beheading her child. During their journey, they visited several places of Egypt, leaving blessings and holiness in their wake.
One of these locations is the Virgin Mary tree, which is now known as the "Al Matareya" suburb. When the family realised Herod's men were pursuing them, they took cover under this tree and were saved.
The water was poured into those areas, where God sprouted the elderberry plant, from which Balsam essence is produced, and Mary took refuge under the shade of the tree, where a spring of water sprung up near it for her to wash Jesus' clothing. It was regarded as one of the most valuable gifts given to kings at the time.
For generations, the tree has been a centre of pilgrimage for Coptic Christians, who come to pray around it or touch it in the hopes of healing illness.
The holy family then proceeded to Old Cairo, where they sought shelter in a cave. Years later, within the walls of the Fortress of Babylon, the Church of Abi Serja was established on this place.
They then travelled to Al-Maadi, where the Nile built the Virgin Mary Church. The Family then boarded a sailing boat bound towards the south.
The family then travelled to Minya and Assiut's Qussqam, where the Al-Moharraq Monastery was established. They then transferred to Deir Derenkah before returning to their homeland in Bethlehem, Palestine, through the same route."

"We visited on a quiet weekday at around 11am, and we were the only group in the site for most of our visit. It was a very peaceful and spiritual experience. The government-managed site is very clean, and has nice restroom facilities. There were no refreshment vendors operating on the day we visited.
Mary’s Tree in al-Matereyyah is an easy 10 minute walk from Cairo Metro (train/subway) station "El-Matarya" on the Green Line (AKA Line #3).
The ticket window and entry gate is at the northwest corner of the facility. As of August 2023, the entry fee for Egyptians is 10 L.E., 60 L.E. for foreigners.
As identified by religious historians, this historical site is one of the 15 locations accommodating the Holy Family in their flight to Egypt – escaping the terrors of Herod -- as mentioned in the second chapter of St. Matthew’s Gospel. A pdf brochure explaining further details regarding the site and the Holy Family’s journey can be downloaded via a QR posted on-site, or by searching for the following terms online: “marytree” and “egymonuments” (via the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities)."

"Amazing. I can't believe how could the French arm do such a thing with this tree. There is a video telling the story of this in a room inside this place. Many improvement were done this month. Egyptian government is taking good care of this place. The paintings in the wall needed to be reviewed because I think there are some mistakes"
