What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Glacier d'Argentière for its mighty, impressive glacial views and the stunning alpine scenery accessible via hiking or the cable car. The quiet nature of Argentière village is also a highlight, offering a more secluded experience compared to Chamonix. Some caution is advised regarding safety on or near the glacier itself.
"Mighty alpine glacier within an easy hike from the téléphérique des Grands Montet. It recedes quickly as well, but still gives a powerful impression.
You can easily descend to the glacier and walk on it, but be very prudent."
Gleb
"Argentiere is another picturesque mountain town overdosed with great scenery and spectacular natural magnificence. Only 10km northeast of Chamonix on the way to the Swiss border, Argentiere is usually reserved for experienced skiers who are ready to go for risky endeavours in off-piste skiing on the mountain slopes of the Grands Montets.
But... several trekking trails in Argentiere are easy to follow and unlike those around Chamonix, they are not infested with sloggers and backpackers. Taking to the tucked-away country lanes in Argentiere will probably be an isolated affair, free from noise except the noises of nature.
The small single-towered country church of Argentiere is a good starting point for reaching the Glacier d’Argentiere on foot. The church is always kept open for visitors. Particularly impressive is its gilded high altar adorned with a marvellous altarpiece and a series of gilded statuettes.
The uphill climb to the glacier takes about an hour and a half. The scenery is unfailingly superb. A detailed road and trailing map, which one can get for free from Chamonix or from the tourist office in Argentiere is obviously essential but one can follow the twists and turns of the river if not pressed for time. Otherwise, take the short cuts as indicated on the map. Once you get to the glacier and so right below the high peaks of the Grands Montets, the scenery becomes more spectacular and mind-blowing, the shimmering glacier mirroring out a kaleidoscope of refracted sunbeams on to the mountain sides.
If you want to avoid the hassle of walking, hop on the bus that goes to the glacier. Only a couple of buses a day traverse the route between Argentiere and the glacier and so ask at the Argentiere tourist office (located in a typical wooden chalet on the main road right in front of the bus stop) for the timetable."
