#greenscreen The Bronze age collapse in tue 12-13th century BC led to the destruction of the Mycennean (proto-Greeks) and Hittite Empires, and led to the weakening and stagnation of Anceint egypt. The most common theory is that the collapse was caused by relentless waves of invasions by the “Sea People” but details about them are unknown. #ancienthistory #ancientgreece #greek #greece #hellas #hitt...

Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the historical significance and the impressive scale of the Mycenaean Tholos Tomb Tzanata, often describing it as a hidden gem. The well-maintained site and its peaceful natural setting are frequently praised. However, the main drawback is inconsistent accessibility, with many travelers finding it closed for maintenance or outside of peak season, leading to disappointment. Reddit

"When we saw the road sign to a Tholos my heart started beating faster, unfortunately the site - although it looked very well kept - was closed. Well kept and clearly someone is doing a lot of maintenance to this (probably) historical gem hidden in the forest, therefore still 3 stars to encourage history lovers who'll visit this site on later dates.

I guess we went just a little bit too early in the season (1st week of May 2022) as we've been missing a lot of archeological sites this way - My actual guess for this site from other reviews would have been 5 stars"

"Locked up for … I guess by the works sign - renovation. Perhaps a swimming pool
Is being added?"

jeremy kalous

"3 stars only because it was closed on a Saturday in May 2023 but well kept up site and looks super interesting. Wished we could have gone inside!
Wiki says “The most important archaeological discovery in Cephalonia (and indeed in Greece) of recent decades is that, in 1991, of the Mycenaean Tholos tomb at the outskirts of Tzanata, near Poros in southeastern Cephalonia (former Municipality of Elios-Pronni) in a setting of olive trees, cypresses and oaks. The tomb was erected around 1300 BC; kings and highly ranked officials were buried in such tombs during the Mycenaean period. It is the largest tholos tomb yet found in northwestern Greece, and was excavated by archaeologist Lazaros Kolonas. The size of the tomb, the nature of the burial offerings found there, and its well-chosen position point to the existence of an important Mycenaean town in the vicinity.”"

Unearthing Mycenaean History

The Mycenaean Tholos Tomb Tzanata is a monumental discovery, unearthed in 1991, and hailed as the most significant archaeological find in Kefalonia in recent decades. Erected around 1300 BC, this impressive structure served as a burial site for royalty and high-ranking officials during the influential Mycenaean civilization. Its sheer size makes it the largest tholos tomb discovered in northwestern Greece, a testament to the power and wealth of its inhabitants. Reddit

The excavation, led by archaeologist Lazaros Kolonas, revealed not only the tomb's grandeur but also burial offerings that hinted at a thriving and important Mycenaean settlement in the surrounding area. The strategic location, amidst natural beauty, further underscores its significance. Visiting this site offers a tangible connection to a pivotal era in ancient Greek history, allowing you to imagine the lives and rituals of a sophisticated Bronze Age culture. Reddit

While the tomb is a remarkable historical artifact, its accessibility can be a challenge. Visitors have noted that the site may be closed for maintenance or outside of peak tourist seasons, and signage can sometimes be misleading. Despite these potential hurdles, the historical importance and the well-maintained nature of the site make it a compelling destination for history enthusiasts. Reddit

Navigating to the Tomb

Reaching the Mycenaean Tholos Tomb Tzanata requires a bit of planning, especially if you're relying on public transport. Located near the town of Poros, the journey involves navigating rural roads and potentially less frequent bus services. While the Ktel bus network serves Kefalonia, including routes that pass through Poros, direct connections to the tomb itself are not common. Reddit

This means that even if you arrive in the vicinity by bus or car, you might still face a considerable walk. For those without a car, researching local taxi services in Poros or factoring in extra walking time is advisable. The serene setting, surrounded by olive groves and cypresses, can make the walk pleasant, but it's important to be prepared, especially during warmer months. Reddit

For travelers seeking the most convenient access, renting a car is often recommended. This allows for greater flexibility in reaching the tomb and exploring other nearby attractions at your own pace. Regardless of your chosen mode of transport, the effort to reach this significant historical site is often rewarded by the unique glimpse into Mycenaean history it provides. Reddit
