"Best to go in the summer (July-September) cause when the ocean is cold you have to jump in cold water to get to the springs then come out of the hot spring to the cold water to get on the boat. Needless to say, I didn't swim lol but The area is beautiful and I got great pics so I was happy!!"

"Enjoyable boat ride from the port to the springs.
Water little bit warmer than usual.
Might get stains on your swimsuit from the Sulphur, would come off after couple of washings.
Time allowed to spend in the water is short.."
Chrysostomos Meliniotis
"Hot springs trip included together with the volcano tour. Boat will stop 50m away from the hot spring, you have to jump down and swim towards the hot spring. Life jackets are not provided.
Water temperature is cold 13-18C, the hot springs is only 5C warmer. You have to be experienced in swimming to go in. Water around the hot spring is yellow due to the sulphur by volcano. Be careful if you are wearing light colour clothings"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Volcanic Origins of Palea Kameni
The ongoing geothermal activity beneath the seabed is what heats the waters around Palea Kameni, creating the famed hot springs. This natural phenomenon makes the island a fascinating destination for those interested in geology and the raw power of nature. The visual evidence of volcanic activity is everywhere, from the dark, rugged terrain to the mineral-rich waters.
Visiting Palea Kameni offers a tangible connection to these geological forces. The boat tours often include stops at Nea Kameni, the younger volcanic island, allowing visitors to hike to the crater and witness the active volcanic landscape firsthand. This dual experience provides a comprehensive understanding of Santorini's volcanic heart.
Understanding the Hot Springs Experience
The journey to the springs is an integral part of the experience. Boats anchor about 50 to 100 meters away, requiring visitors to swim to the designated areas. This swim is often described as invigorating, especially if the sea is cold. The water itself is a distinctive yellow-brown hue due to high concentrations of sulfur and iron, minerals that are believed to have therapeutic benefits.
Be prepared for the mineral content to potentially stain swimwear, so wearing older or darker suits is highly recommended. While the experience is unique and memorable, it's important to manage expectations regarding the water temperature and be comfortable with a moderate swim.
Navigating Santorini's Volcanic Tours
When choosing a tour, consider the type of boat (traditional wooden boats, catamarans, or larger vessels) and the amenities offered. Some tours focus more on the adventure, while others offer a more relaxed, scenic cruise, sometimes including sunset views. Booking in advance is crucial, especially during the busy summer months, to ensure availability.
It's essential to pack appropriately for these tours. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for the volcano hike, and a change of clothes is advisable after swimming in the hot springs. Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water, as the sun can be intense.
