What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Budapest History Museum for its comprehensive exhibits within the stunning setting of Buda Castle, offering a deep dive into the city's rich past. The furnished rooms and historical artifacts are frequently highlighted as engaging. However, some find the stone exhibits less captivating, and navigating the castle grounds can be extensive.
"Spent a long time discovering this Jewel of a museum. Lots of floors and Great presentation about the history and life of the city below. Interesting and not too busy. Exhibits were well spaced with dual language signs. They unclude fine art, antiquities with the banner tapestry,, a room full of maps and items showing the castle and city origins, the areas of the medieval castle with chapel, vaulted cistern and workrooms. Plus the renovated room of Stephen Hall for a small extra fee with it's ornate interior."

"Even without a ticket, you can climb the hill and take in the beautiful views.
The museum is included with the Budapest Tourist pass (as is the National Gallery and the Libraries) or you can pay for each separately.
St Stephen Hall is apparently a big attraction for tourists, but I much preferred the exhibitions about the history of the area. I found the information about the region's geography and many cultural influenced interesting. I enjoyed their collection of artifacts from prehistory, the Roman era, the Medieval period, Ottoman rule, and up to present day.
I imagine it would also be a good spot for kids - there's a number of educational games that I (a full grown adult) loved playing."

"The museum itself is very worth visiting. It is huge and they have restored everything very well. However the staffs are a bit lack of knowledge. I went for a visit and the staff told me to store my small backpack. But then I saw many visitors with even bigger sized backpacks were allowed into the museum. They don’t seem to have a “standard”. Make sure you prepare a 100 forint coin or 1 Euro coin as it is required for the self service cloakroom cabinet, you will get it back when you open the cabinet. There is just no place to change the coins."
