"I adored this place. It was desert when we arrived. You can get to this place with a 2 mins drive on a dirt road (plenty of potholes) but overall it is easily reachable. The cliffs are awesome, you can even easily climb the cliffs to have an amazing view! Parking is free."

Michele Coluccia

"Lovely basalt columns with beautiful views of the expansive area including the mountains.
Short climb up either on the steeper middle path or the less steep path on the left.

It is a short stop.

Use the main road and drive up the gravel path for 3 minutes rather than the 31minutes north then south again!"

Travelling Doc

"There’s something humbling about standing before a landscape shaped by fire, ice, and time. The Gerðuberg cliffs rise like ancient sentinels—perfectly stacked basalt columns etched into the Icelandic earth. Stark, wild, and impossibly beautiful.

“There is a rare and reverent beauty in places left wild—where nature speaks in silence, and the earth remembers how to breathe without us.”

Short gravel road. Free to visit."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geology of Gerðuberg Basalt Columns

The Gerðuberg Basalt Cliffs are a spectacular example of columnar jointing, a geological process that occurs when lava flows cool and contract. As the thick lava flow cools from the top down, it shrinks, creating cracks. These cracks propagate downwards, forming polygonal columns, most commonly hexagonal, due to the most efficient way to relieve stress. Instagram+1

These columns at Gerðuberg are particularly impressive due to their scale and near-perfect symmetry, stretching for over a kilometer and reaching heights of up to 14 meters. They stand as a stark, wild testament to Iceland's powerful volcanic past, a landscape shaped by fire, ice, and immense geological time. InstagramReddit

Visiting Gerðuberg offers a unique opportunity to witness this natural phenomenon up close. The sheer size and regularity of the columns create an almost architectural, yet entirely natural, structure that is both humbling and awe-inspiring. Reddit
