Any Must-Do Excursion Tours?

I'll be visiting Iceland Aug 21-Sept 11, including Westfjords, Diamond Circle, Ring Road, and Golden Circle. (I'll have a 4x4 but am hoping to avoid as many scary roads as possible.) Are there any excursion tours you'd recommend? I love anything animal, hiking, and scenic…

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Skútustaðagígar as a quick, scenic, and geologically fascinating stop. The unique pseudocraters and beautiful views of Lake Mývatn are consistently highlighted as major draws. While some note the craters are more impressive from a distance and mention potential midges, the overall experience is highly recommended for its natural beauty and educational value.

"Skútustaðagígar is a fantastic and quick stop on the south side of Lake Mývatn. It's an easy walk from the parking lot, and the stunning views make it well worth the brief detour. From the top, you'll be treated to a breathtaking panorama of Lake Mývatn, surrounded by vibrant green fields where Icelandic horses often graze. The craters themselves are a geological marvel, formed by steam explosions when molten lava flowed over the wetlands. It's an incredible example of volcanic activity and a beautiful spot to take some photos and appreciate the unique landscape. Highly recommended for a short, scenic break!"

"This is a natural attraction near the southwest shores of Lake Myvatn that you can access from the Visitor Centre carpark. What you find is a field of pseudo craters were formed during the volcanic eruptions of Lúdentaborgir and Þrengslaborgir around 2,300 years ago.

You will find trail information at the main trailhead. There are several trails of various lengths that pass through the pseudo crater field. You can walk up several of them and look inside, not a lot to see of the pseudo craters compared to nearby crater called Hverfjall and the craters tend to look more definitive from a distance compared to up close but the grounds are still fairly interesting geologically. There is quality birdlife in this area as well if you have interest and a set of binoculars."

"Lovely place to walk around and enjoy the views. A few bugs still in early September, but manageable."
