"Skútustaðagígar is a fantastic and quick stop on the south side of Lake Mývatn. It's an easy walk from the parking lot, and the stunning views make it well worth the brief detour. From the top, you'll be treated to a breathtaking panorama of Lake Mývatn, surrounded by vibrant green fields where Icelandic horses often graze. The craters themselves are a geological marvel, formed by steam explosions when molten lava flowed over the wetlands. It's an incredible example of volcanic activity and a beautiful spot to take some photos and appreciate the unique landscape. Highly recommended for a short, scenic break!"

"This is a natural attraction near the southwest shores of Lake Myvatn that you can access from the Visitor Centre carpark. What you find is a field of pseudo craters were formed during the volcanic eruptions of Lúdentaborgir and Þrengslaborgir around 2,300 years ago.
You will find trail information at the main trailhead. There are several trails of various lengths that pass through the pseudo crater field. You can walk up several of them and look inside, not a lot to see of the pseudo craters compared to nearby crater called Hverfjall and the craters tend to look more definitive from a distance compared to up close but the grounds are still fairly interesting geologically. There is quality birdlife in this area as well if you have interest and a set of binoculars."

The Geology of Pseudocraters
This process is relatively rare, occurring only when lava encounters water or water-saturated ground. Similar formations can be found in other volcanic regions, most famously in Hawaii, and even on Mars, highlighting the universal geological processes at play. Walking among these pseudocraters provides a tangible connection to Iceland's dynamic volcanic past and the powerful forces that shaped its landscape.
Visitors can explore the pseudocrater field via a network of walking paths. While you can walk up to and look into some of the craters, their true geological significance and unique appearance are often best appreciated from a slight distance, allowing you to see the chains of these formations against the backdrop of Lake Mývatn.

It's worth noting that while the natural beauty is a major draw, the area can also attract midges, particularly during the warmer months. Bringing insect repellent is a practical tip to ensure a more comfortable experience while enjoying the natural wonders.
