"Thrikkanad Thrayambakeswara Temple stands in front of Arabic Ocean facing to the west. This Temple stands head high, attracting everybody's attention on the side of the national highway between Kanhangad and Kasargod. In Malabar, this is the only Siva Temple facing to the west. The Temples in old Moonnuthara (Uduma, Chemmanad and Pallikkara) are the participants in the festival of Thrikkanad Temple. The Gods and the believers of each Temple will join in the procession of the Thrikkanad Temple festival from their places. Then together they will go through the seashore as a big procession. Among them The Velichappadu of Palakkunnu Temple will be accompanying. Everybody will enter in to the Temple. Expect the Velichappadu. It is said that, like a watchman the Velichappadu have to stand near the main steps is connected with some myths. This temple is famous for Karkitaka Vavu Bali."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Significance of a West-Facing Shiva Temple

The Trikkanad Thrayambakeswara Temple holds a unique distinction in Malabar as one of the few Shiva temples that faces west. This architectural and spiritual orientation is quite rare for Shiva temples, which traditionally face east. This unique feature has earned it the moniker 'Dakshina Kashi' (Kashi of the South), drawing parallels to the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, which is also a west-facing shrine. This unusual alignment is believed to hold specific spiritual significance, attracting devotees seeking particular blessings or experiences. The temple's location on the shores of the Arabian Sea further enhances its mystical aura, creating a serene and powerful atmosphere for worship and contemplation. Reddit

Rituals and Festivals: Karkitaka Vavu Bali

Trikkanad Sea Temple is a highly revered site for performing ancestral rituals, most notably the Karkitaka Vavu Bali. This ceremony, observed during the new moon day of the Malayalam month of Karkitakam, is dedicated to offering oblations to departed souls. Many families visit the temple during this period to conduct these sacred rites, seeking peace and blessings for their ancestors. The temple's proximity to the sea is considered auspicious for these rituals. Beyond Vavu Bali, the temple also participates in a unique festival where the deities and believers from nearby Moonnuthara temples (Uduma, Chemmanad, and Pallikkara) join in a grand procession along the seashore, culminating at the Trikkanad Temple. This communal celebration highlights the strong inter-temple relationships and local traditions. Reddit

Architectural and Cultural Connections

The temple's architecture, while rooted in traditional Kerala styles, is distinguished by its west-facing sanctum. The surrounding area, known as Moonnuthara, comprises Uduma, Chemmanad, and Pallikkara, which have a historical and cultural connection with Trikkanad. During festivals, there's a unique procession where deities from these temples join the Trikkanad Temple festival. A notable figure in these processions is the Velichappadu (oracle) of Palakkunnu Temple, who has a specific role, often standing guard near the main steps, linked to ancient myths. This intricate web of traditions and inter-temple relationships makes Trikkanad Sea Temple a vibrant center of cultural and religious life in the region. Reddit
