Reviews Summary
Visitors find Bhattiprolu Stupa to be a historically significant site, particularly for its ancient Buddhist roots and linguistic importance. While the site itself may appear simple, its deep historical context and peaceful atmosphere are highly appreciated. Some visitors note the lack of interpretive signage and the fact that major artifacts are housed elsewhere.
"The Bhattiprolu Buddhist site and stupa is from about the 2nd-century BC, and one of the oldest firmly dated Buddhist sites in Andhra Pradesh. It looks small and simple, but its significance is large. This is where inscribed dedicatory items were found, whose Brahmi script is attested to be the oldest known "Southern variety". This is in contrast to the Hathigumpha inscription in Odisha also from about the same ancient century that reflects the "Northern variety" (both are close, except for "gha, ja, ma, la and sa" in Sanskrit/Prakrit alphabet). While India already had a highly advanced language and alphabet by 1000 BC, the evidence for writing scripts is scant and highly disputed. The Bhattiprolu site provides the firm evidence accepted by scholars, and thus is an important place of Indian heritage.
Bhattiprolu is also called Pratipalapura and Pithunda Nagara in ancient texts of Buddhism and Hinduism. The site was mere mounds in mid-19th century. They were excavated between 1865 and 1880, which yielded inscribed dedicatory items in a casket within the Buddha stupa. Another round of excavations in late 1960s revealed a vihara and evidence of continued occupation through about 10th to 12th century AD. Thus Bhattiprolu was likely a Buddhist Monastery for about 1400 years before it was likely destroyed and ruined sometime after the 13th century.
The site has a large brick stupa about 40 meters in dome diameter (total width with base is about 45 meters which includes the circumambulation path around the stupa). The height to dome diameter ratio is about 0.46. Please walk around the site and see some of the marble fragments and inscribed stones left here, the more important discoveries from here have been moved to the state museum for preservation."

"The original name of Bhattiprolu was Pratipalapura, a flourishing town in the ancient Sala kingdom that predated Andhra Satavahanas. From available inscriptional evidence, King Kuberaka was ruling over Bhattiprolu around 230 BCE. Bhattiprolu is well known for its Buddha stupa (Vikramarka kota dibba) built about 3rd-2nd century BCE. That's the history of bhattiprolu(ప్రతిపాలపుర) as per the Google records."

"Recently re-visited the Buddhist Stupa. During my child hood the place was not fenced and was only a mound. In this trip could see brick walls and the place is protected. The presence of this stupa indicates the influence of Buddhism in this area . Nice place to look around and sit down under trees for some time. Must have been an important place with good numbers of human settlements for building such a stupa.
ASI should install a board giving a brief back ground of the location and any findings to educate visitors."
