"What a beautiful experience this time to visit Mangalajodi - 'The Bird watchers paradise'. Though this is not the season. But as we had a field visit, we had interacted with the main team of people. The interesting story behind this place is the transformation of people from poaching to conservation. A village of people are now engaged in conservation of the migratory birds and some of the birds have turned into residential ones. But the best season to visit this place is in December and January where one can see huge number and variety of migratory and residential birds. The boatride will cost 1200/- per boat where atleast 4-5 people can be accommodated. The ride between the swamps will take one and half hours. If one will carry binoculars it will be very helpful."

Once infamous as a poachers’ village, Mangalajodi underwent a remarkable transformation starting in the late 1990s, driven by conservation efforts from groups like Wild Orissa and the Chilika Development Authority. Former poachers, now protectors, serve as guides, steering traditional wooden boats (naukas) through marshy channels lined with reeds. This community-led initiative has boosted bird numbers from a mere 5,000 in the early 2000s to lakhs today, earning the wetland an Important Bird Area (IBA) status.
Visitors can enjoy boat rides (₹1200 for two hours), spotting birds like the purple heron, glossy ibis, and whiskered tern, with guides providing binoculars and insights. The Mangalajodi Nature Camp offers cottages managed by locals, serving homecooked meals like crab curry.
