Reviews Summary

Narwar Fort is a historically significant and architecturally rich site, offering stunning hilltop views and a glimpse into India's past. Visitors appreciate its grandeur and the sense of adventure in exploring its ruins. However, many note the lack of maintenance, poor signage, and limited facilities, which detract from the overall experience.

"Narwar Fort is a historical fort situated atop a hill in the Narwar town of Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh, India. The fort is perched at an elevation of about 500 feet above the town and is known for its splendid architecture and rich history. Said to be related to the legend of Raja Nal of the Hindu epic Mahabharata, the fort was later under various dynasties, including the Kachwaha Rajputs and the Marathas. This fort exemplifies a mix of Rajput and Muslim architectural styles resulting from the numerous modifications over centuries. Inside, one can find flat ceilings, multifoiled arches, and intricately carved pillars. It has three large gates “ the Hathi Pol, the Badalgarh Gate, and the Nal Darwaza. Despite being in a state of ruin, Narwar Fort still conveys a sense of grandeur and provides a panoramic view of the town and surrounding countryside. It has numerous palaces and temples within its premises, including the Raja Mansingh Palace, which is the most notable structure."

"It's an amazing place suffering due to lack of maintenance. There are barely any signs to direct you, animal droppings make this place stink like anything and there is no store nearby, add to it a few locals use it as a spot to drink.

So much of history, culture and architecture rendered useless.

But if you're a ruin buff like me who wishes to visit this place, I'd suggest reach early at 9 when fort opens as it'd take whole day to explore, bring your own food and water (but don't litter, please) and read about this place in advance because the plaques there would give you nothing."

Siddharth Singhal

"Historic place full of adventure and old architecture marvel, and natural beauty.
I'd recommend visiting this place and feel the fresh air."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Glimpse into History

Narwar Fort, perched atop a 500-foot hill in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, is a testament to centuries of Indian history. Believed to have been built or rebuilt by the Kachwaha Rajputs in the 10th century, it later saw modifications by various rulers including the Pratiharas, Tomaras, Mughals, and Marathas. This rich tapestry of rulers has left an indelible mark on its architecture, showcasing a blend of Rajput and Muslim styles. The fort's strategic location on the Vindhya Range offered a commanding view, making it a significant stronghold. InstagramReddit

Legend also connects the fort to Raja Nal of the epic Mahabharata, adding a layer of mythological significance. The fort's history is punctuated by tales of sieges, like the one by Sikandar Lodhi, and stories of bravery, such as the dancer who sacrificed her life to relay a crucial message. Inside, remnants of palaces, temples, and intricate carvings speak volumes about its past grandeur, even in its current state of ruin. Reddit

Despite its historical importance, Narwar Fort faces challenges with maintenance. However, for history enthusiasts and ruin buffs, it offers an unparalleled opportunity to step back in time and imagine life within its formidable walls. The sheer scale of the fort, spread over 8 km in circumference, is awe-inspiring. Reddit

Exploring the Fort's Layout

Narwar Fort is strategically divided into four distinct zones, each with its own character and history: Majhloka (the central part), Dulha-Ahata (western section), Madar-Ahata (southeast section), and Gurjar-Ahata (southernmost part). The primary entrance is from the east, through the Alamgir Gate, formerly known as Pisanhari Gate. The second gate, Saiyidon ka Darwaza, though in a state of disrepair, hints at its former magnificence. Reddit

Within these zones, numerous structures await discovery. These include palaces like the Phulwa Mahal, Rani Mahal, and the notable Raja Mansingh Palace, which showcase impressive architectural elements such as flat ceilings and multifoiled arches. You'll also find remnants of temples and courtyards designed with an interplay of light and shadow. A unique feature is the presence of ancient bath tubs in some palaces, complete with a sophisticated hot and cold-water piping system, a marvel for its time. Reddit

Adding to the fort's intrigue are its water management systems. Eight wells and nine stepwells, dating back to the 8th century, are spread across the fort. These structures, some with ghats 30 feet deep, could historically accommodate a large number of water collectors simultaneously, highlighting the advanced engineering of the era. Reddit

Photography Opportunities

Narwar Fort is a photographer's dream, offering a wealth of visual narratives. The commanding hilltop location provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, especially stunning during sunrise and sunset. Capture the vastness of the fort's ramparts and the sprawling town below. Instagram+1

The fort's architecture itself is a major draw for photographers. Focus on the intricate details of the multifoiled arches, the geometric patterns of the flat ceilings, and the remnants of carved pillars. The various palaces, though in ruins, still retain a sense of their former glory, offering dramatic backdrops. Don't miss the ancient stepwells and wells, which present unique photographic compositions, especially when capturing the play of light and shadow. InstagramReddit

For those interested in capturing the essence of the place, consider the atmospheric quality of the ruins. The interplay of natural light with the ancient stone structures creates a sense of timelessness. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and carry extra batteries, as you'll likely spend hours exploring and capturing the fort's many facets. TikTok
