What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Meru Betiri National Park is lauded for its stunning, remote beaches like Sukamade and Teluk Hijau, and the incredible opportunity to witness sea turtles nesting. Visitors praise the raw, natural beauty and the adventurous journey required to reach these pristine locations. However, the challenging access via 4WD and limited facilities are frequently mentioned as aspects requiring careful planning.
"I want to share experiences with all of you and try to explain why you must use a jeep, in addition to road factors that can only be passed by jeeps or large vehicles, other than that is for your safety.
Sukamade Beach is in the area of Sukamade Village Pesanggaran Sarongan District Banyuwangi Regency East Java Province. Sukamade Beach is inside of the Merubetiri National Park, to reach Sukamade Village, you must take a Jeep
you can rent from Sarongan (2 way back), or you can also ask to pick up at the Jajag Station, and you can also rent a Jeep from the city if you are in Banyuwangi staying in the city (usually a rented Jeep to go to Ijen Crater, but can also go to Sukamade, or instead you can all ask for Banyuwangi trip packages)
pass plantation with a very good view, then enter Pesanggaran area, in this Pesanggaran area, the road has started to rocky and the road is getting more and more damaged and you have to cross the river using a jeep.
That's why you have to ride a Jeep because if an ordinary car or motorcycle it can be slippery and mired, later after passing through the village in Pesanggaran road conditions start to rise after passing through the cemetery, the road starts to be more rocky making Jeep cars tilt to the right and left, the condition of the streets uphill and meandering.
During this trip, there are lots of flora and fauna you can find, such as wild monkeys, Javanese eagles, peacocks, langurs, deer, porcupines, if you are lucky you can meet panthers and leopards. I hope you think twice about riding a motorcycle here.
This adventure is not limited to passing damaged roads, descending and climbing. A river blocked my journey and my team. Very fortunate our team car was an all terrain car that became a true adventurous partner.
The distance from Rajegwesi to Sukamade when viewed on GPS is not too far, but the road conditions are very steep and challenging. The steep incline and descent, and the narrow and dark road because they have to divide the wilderness of the forest which is famous for the habitat of Javan striped big cats.
Thank you Merubetiri National Park has made my adventure very memorable."

"3 locations you must visit in this national park: (1) Rajegwesi beach, a fisherman village where you can buy grilled fish for lunch, seeing fisherman activities and hire a boat to neighboring Teluk Hijau beach.
(2) Teluk Hijau (Green Bay) is a white sandy beach. Not many visitors there and you can see monkeys preying on your snacks. Two access to get there: trekking by foot or hire a boat with little cost.
(3) Sukamade beach, the ultimate destination in this national park. You need to pay additional cost to watch turtles laying their eggs at night (start 8.00pm) under supervision of rangers. You can hire a room or camp in the appointed location, with additional little cost. The location is about 750 m from the beach, and you can hear the wave sound at night. Incubating room for turtle eggs can be seen in the morning when the rangers pickup the babies and give to visitor to release them at the beach.
The road inside Meru Betiri is stony, non paved, muddy climbing road. Need SUV with very high ground clearance to tackle it and to cross four small rivers which is almost dry at summer (Apr to Sep) but flooded at monsoon (Oct to Mar). Several classic SUV can be hired at Sarongan village, the last village before entering the park. From Sarongan to Sukamade is about 2 hours drive for distance 8-9 km only"

"1 of the best tourism spot in Banyuwangi. You can find beautiful beach with white sand and green water at Teluk Hijau. You also can see green turtle lay off the egg at night in Sukamade. To reach the place you need 4 wd Car (Hiline, Taft, Jeep) road are heavy to pass and you need crossing 3 rivers and access will close if heavey rain and debt of water is high."

🎫 🏞️ Onsite Experience
Meru Betiri is rich in biodiversity. You can spot wild monkeys, Javanese eagles, peacocks, langurs, deer, and porcupines. With luck, you might even encounter panthers and leopards. The park is also a crucial nesting ground for various sea turtle species.
Key locations include Rajegwesi Beach (a fisherman village), Teluk Hijau (Green Bay) with its white sandy beach, and Sukamade Beach, the primary destination for turtle nesting.
You have two main options to reach Teluk Hijau: trekking on foot through the park or hiring a boat from Rajegwesi Beach for a small fee. The boat trip is generally quicker and offers scenic views.
While the park offers a wilderness experience, hiking can be challenging due to the rough terrain and dense forest. The primary access to key sites like Sukamade is via 4WD vehicles. Trekking is an option for shorter distances, like to Teluk Hijau.
Always maintain a safe distance from wildlife. Do not feed the animals, especially monkeys, as they can become aggressive and snatch your belongings. Observe them respectfully from afar.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
Dining options within the park are very limited. Rajegwesi Beach has a fisherman village where you can buy fresh grilled fish for lunch. For other meals, it's best to bring your own food and snacks, especially if you plan to stay overnight.
At Rajegwesi Beach, you can enjoy freshly caught fish grilled on the spot. It's a great opportunity to experience local cuisine and support the local fishermen.
Yes, it's highly recommended to bring ample food and drinks from Banyuwangi or Sarongan before heading into the park, especially if you plan to spend a full day or stay overnight. This ensures you have enough provisions.
Sukamade Beach itself has minimal facilities. While there might be very basic local food stalls, it's not guaranteed. Bringing your own food is the most reliable option for meals and snacks.
If you are camping, you might be able to cook your own food, but ensure you have the necessary equipment. Always practice responsible camping and dispose of waste properly.
📸 📸 Photography
Meru Betiri offers stunning natural landscapes. Capture the dramatic coastline of Rajegwesi Beach, the serene beauty of Teluk Hijau's emerald waters, and the magical moment of turtles nesting at Sukamade. Wildlife photography is also a highlight.
While the park offers incredible photo ops, the rugged terrain and potential for river crossings mean your gear could be exposed to dust and water. Ensure your equipment is protected, and consider a waterproof bag.
The morning light often provides beautiful, soft illumination for Teluk Hijau, highlighting the vibrant green of the water. Late afternoon can also offer golden hour light.
Photography during turtle nesting is usually allowed but with strict guidelines to avoid disturbing the animals. Flash photography is typically prohibited. Always follow the instructions of the park rangers.
While dedicated photography tours might not be common, you can arrange private Jeep tours that allow for more flexibility in stopping for photo opportunities. Discuss your interests with your driver.
