What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Sekumpul Waterfall is undeniably one of Bali's most stunning natural attractions, with its towering cascades and lush surroundings. However, many visitors report a negative experience due to aggressive local guide practices and inflated fees, which can overshadow the natural beauty. The challenging hike is also a significant factor for visitors to consider.
"We visited Sekumpul last week — 2 adults and our 2 girls — and it was such an amazing experience! We paid around 200k per person, which included a guide and a motorbike ride. The ride was super fun, especially for the kids, and made the trip much easier.
Our two guides were so friendly and helpful — they took us to two waterfalls, explained a lot about the nature around us, and even took tons of great photos for us.
Sekumpul itself was just wow — absolutely beautiful and powerful, surrounded by lush greenery. The best part? It wasn’t very crowded, so we could really enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Definitely one of the highlights of our Bali trip! 🌺✨"

"Pros: most beautiful waterfalls in Bali by far. Water is clean and thankfully, the community hasn’t polluted or loitered the area like in other locations. It is absolutely worth the visit.
Con: quite the hike. The way there is through very narrow streets so it is better if you ride a scooter. No parking available for cars, we had to leave our rental car at the top of the mountain and walk around 10 minutes to reach the entrance to the waterfalls.
Con: expensive, costs around 150000, to do 2 waterfalls and 250000 to do all 3. We understand the need of people in Bali and felt like it was in support of the local economy. Our guide Sura was lovely.
It is quite a hike. Not suitable for people with mobility issues."

"Beautiful spot, quite a hike. Super strange vibes - absolutely need a guide. We tried to pay for a ticket to entry with no guide, but then turned around and were told the guy selling us on it all was the guide and stuck with us.
Seems to be the vibe of Bali tourism overall. Worth a check still.
150k to see 2 waterfalls, and 250k to see an extra one.
We did the first, so roughly $20 USD to see 2 waterfalls. More than enough for us.
Coffee afterwards was great to just hang out"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider the age and stamina of your children before embarking on the trek. If you decide to go, ensure everyone wears appropriate footwear, and pack plenty of water and snacks. The sheer beauty of the waterfalls can be captivating for kids, but managing the physical demands of the hike is key to a positive experience.
💰 Budget Travelers
To manage costs, research current guide fees beforehand, be firm in your negotiations, or consider visiting with a group to share costs. Opting for local eateries away from the main viewpoint can also save money on food. Renting a scooter can be a more economical transport option than hiring a private driver for the entire day.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the scale of the falls and consider a polarizing filter for water reflections. The best light is often during the golden hours of early morning or late afternoon, though dramatic shots can also be achieved during rain showers. Be prepared for the hike and protect your gear from mist and potential rain.

The Sekumpul Waterfall Guide Controversy
Travelers have expressed that even with prior arrangements or by attempting to visit independently, they were often pressured or outright denied access unless they paid the inflated guide fees. This practice, though not an official government regulation, has left a negative impression on many, contrasting with more positive experiences at other Balinese waterfalls.
It's crucial for visitors to be aware of this situation. Researching current practices, being firm in your communication, and understanding that the official fee is separate from the guide's fee are important steps. Some suggest that visiting with a pre-booked tour that includes a guide might offer a more transparent experience.
The Hike and What to Expect
It's highly recommended to wear sturdy, non-slip footwear, such as hiking shoes or good trainers, to navigate the slippery paths and uneven surfaces safely. The trails are generally well-maintained but can become muddy, especially after rain.
While the hike is challenging, the reward is immense. The stunning views of the multiple cascades and the surrounding verdant landscape make every step worthwhile. Allow ample time to enjoy the scenery, take photos, and perhaps even take a refreshing dip in the natural pools if conditions permit.
The Viral Hanging Restaurant & Bar
The restaurant provides a comfortable setting to appreciate the grandeur of Sekumpul Waterfall, making it a perfect stop after the hike. While the food and drinks are generally considered decent, the primary attraction is undoubtedly the breathtaking vista. It's a popular spot for photos and a moment of tranquility amidst the adventure.
Given its popularity, especially on social media, it's advisable to consider visiting during off-peak hours or being prepared for potential crowds. Some travelers have noted that prices here are higher than at local warungs, which is typical for establishments with such prime locations.
