Reviews Summary

Oudlajan is praised for its authentic historical atmosphere and beautiful old mansions, offering a genuine glimpse into old Tehran. Visitors appreciate the chance to explore its rich past through its alleys and architecture. However, some note that many buildings require restoration, and the area can feel a bit neglected in parts.

"An old neighborhood that looks like any other neighborhood, but is full of old houses and very beautiful mansions. If you want to spend a day walking and see the traces of old Tehran in modern Tehran, Oudlajan is one of the best options. This neighborhood has a very interesting history that I recommend you read about to understand what history lies behind the old walls of this neighborhood and what kind of people used to come and go there."

Amin Shirpour

"Oudlajan neighborhood is one of the oldest and most authentic neighborhoods in Tehran, with a rich history. This neighborhood is located in the center of Tehran and is bordered by Amir Kabir Street to the north, 15 Khordad Street to the south, Rey Street to the east, and Nasser Khosrow Street to the west. Oudlajan was considered one of the main and important neighborhoods of the capital during the Qajar and Pahlavi periods and played a significant role in the history of Tehran.

Oudlajan was one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Tehran in the past due to the presence of numerous historical monuments and noble houses. With 2,619 houses and 1,146 shops, this neighborhood was considered the largest neighborhood in old Tehran. Many famous figures in contemporary Iranian history, such as the Qavam-od-Dowleh family and Seyyed Hassan Modarres, lived in this neighborhood. The spacious houses in this neighborhood were known as Qamar Khanum's House.

The name Oudlajan is composed of two words, "Oud" and "Laji", which was called this name because this neighborhood was in the order of the perfumers. Some have also considered the name of this neighborhood to be pronounced "Abdullah Jan" in the Kelimian dialect. The people of Oudlajan used to speak Tati, which was the main language of the Tehran region in ancient times.

During the Qajar and Pahlavi periods, Oudlajan showed greater loyalty to religion and spirituality due to the presence of 16 mosques and schools. With its magnificent gardens and houses, this neighborhood was one of the aristocratic areas of Tehran. The Modares House, Malek-ol-Shuara Garden, Golestan Palace, and Masoudieh Mansion are among the historical monuments of this neighborhood.

The Oudlajan neighborhood maintained its social prestige until the middle of the Pahlavi period, but after the great social and urban changes that occurred in the 1340s, its importance gradually decreased. The expansion of the market in all directions of the neighborhood caused Oudlajan to turn from a wealthy neighborhood into a warehouse for the market, and some old, ownerless houses became places for addicts and dangerous people.

Oudlajan has been registered on the country's national heritage list, and efforts have been made to preserve and revive this historical neighborhood. However, many of the historical buildings in this neighborhood need restoration and reconstruction so that they can be used as tourist attractions.

Oudlajan neighborhood is considered one of Tehran's tourist attractions with its historical alleys and passages. Passing through Bagh Nezam-od-Dawlah, passing through Hammam Nawab, passing through Shetar-Glo, and passing through Hoz Mosque are among the famous passages in this neighborhood, each of which contains stories and memories of Tehran's past.

Despite the many changes and developments it has undergone throughout its history, Oudlajan remains one of Tehran's original neighborhoods with its own identity. With its numerous historical monuments and old alleys, this neighborhood can be considered as a cultural and historical tourism destination.

Finally, Oudlajan neighborhood, with its rich history and valuable historical monuments, is one of Tehran's cultural treasures that needs more attention and protection. We hope that by restoring and reconstructing this neighborhood, we can preserve Tehran's historical identity and pass it on to future generations."
