"Sanctuary Convent Maria Santissima della Vetrana, a place of Catholic worship, located in the town of Castellana Grotte (BA). Here the "Madonna della Vetrana" is venerated, patron saint of the town and in whose honor the celebrations are held on January 11th and 12th.
In 1690, on December 23, the city was struck by the plague, the situation changed during the night between January 11 and 12, 1691, when two prelates prayed incessantly to free the population from the plague to the Madonna della Vetrana (a name that, according to some sources, derives from “veterana”, meaning “ancient”; according to popular tradition, however, “vetrana” comes from the homonymous dialect term, which was used to indicate the plague), portrayed in a painting dating back to the 14th century (around 1300) and located in a small rock church not far from the town of Castellana. The two priests both had the same inspiration: to anoint the buboes of the sick with the oil from the lamp that burned perpetually next to that same painting, to heal from the plague. By doing so, and setting fire to everything that had been in contact with the disease, from that 12th January onwards no one in Castellana died of the plague. Everyone immediately attributed the miraculous intercession of the Virgin of Vetrana, and her veneration grew, until all the sacred and secular authorities of Castellana, as a sign of gratitude, decided to celebrate the grandiose event every year."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Miraculous History of the Madonna della Vetrana

The Sanctuary of Maria SS della Vetrana is intrinsically linked to a pivotal moment in Castellana Grotte's history: the devastating plague of 1690. According to tradition, during the night of January 11-12, 1691, two priests prayed fervently to the Madonna della Vetrana. They were inspired to anoint the sick with oil from the lamp burning before a 14th-century painting of the Virgin, believed to be ancient ('vetrana'). This act, coupled with burning infected materials, is credited with ending the plague and saving the town. Reddit

This miraculous event led to immense gratitude and a growing veneration for the Madonna della Vetrana. The annual celebrations on January 11th and 12th commemorate this deliverance, drawing pilgrims and visitors alike. The sanctuary itself stands as a testament to this faith and the enduring power of devotion. Reddit

The name 'Vetrana' itself is debated, with some suggesting it derives from 'veterana' (ancient), while popular tradition links it to a dialect term for the plague. Regardless of the etymology, the association with healing and salvation is central to the sanctuary's identity. Reddit

The Sanctuary of Maria SS della Vetrana is not just a place of worship but also an architectural wonder, largely due to the dedication of a young immigrant father. TikTok He began constructing the sanctuary in 1912, dedicating nearly 42 years to its creation. The construction involved the meticulous use of rare minerals, precious stones, and seashells, giving the sanctuary a unique and intricate aesthetic. TikTok

This painstaking effort resulted in a structure that is considered by some to be an 'eighth wonder of the world.' TikTok The materials used are not merely decorative; they are woven into the fabric of the sanctuary, reflecting a deep spiritual connection and a commitment to creating a sacred space of unparalleled beauty. Visitors often remark on the peacefulness and the sensory experience of being within its walls. Reddit
