Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the MEI National Museum of Italian Emigration for its well-crafted, multimedia-rich exhibits and innovative NFC passport system, offering a deep dive into Italian emigration history. However, some find the multimedia content lacking in English translation and note that the museum's depth is better suited for adults than children.
"The museum was empty at midday. As a couple we were outnumbered by staff by 2-1. I don’t understand why as the stories and information are well presented. Most was translated into English or had English subtitles. I wouldn’t recommend it for children but for adults it’s worth a visit if you want to know about the emigration of Italians."

"I typically avoid writing negative comments, but this particular experience was unlike any other I've had. While touring Italy in April as a scholar deeply engaged in migration studies, I made a point to wake up early and visit this specific museum in Genoa. Unfortunately, upon arrival, I discovered that the museum was hosting an event for school pupils, which restricted access to the second floor. Despite my time constraints due to a scheduled train departure, the museum staff refused to allow me even a brief visit to the second floor. This left me frustrated for two reasons: Firstly, why sell tickets if the museum isn't ready to welcome tourists? Why not to warn a visitor about that before taking money for a ticket? I've visited numerous museums worldwide where events were perfectly integrated with tourist visits. This experience left me profoundly disappointed, and I regret not spending my time at the Museum of Mare."

"This will be a great multi-medium museum when it finishes the unfinished other language media. While most of the printed sections in lude English, the other media with English tags are not yet functional. It was okay for me because I speak Italian but not for my husband who was really interested in the topic but came away disappointed. Recommend for Italian speakers but not for others. Great concept and topic."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
If you are visiting with children, consider focusing on the interactive elements like the NFC passport, which can add a gamified aspect to the visit. However, be prepared that some of the historical context and multimedia presentations might be best appreciated by teenagers or adults.
🧑🎓 Scholars and History Enthusiasts
Scholars should be aware of the potential language limitations in some multimedia content, as noted by visitors. However, the extensive English text accompanying the exhibits ensures that the core information is accessible. The museum's focus on the Italian diaspora provides a unique lens for studying global migration patterns.
🗣️ Italian Language Speakers

The NFC Passport Experience
This system allows for a dynamic presentation of information, moving beyond static displays. It's designed to cater to different learning styles, offering a rich multimedia experience. While the concept is highly praised, some visitors have noted that not all multimedia content is fully functional or available in English, which can slightly detract from the seamlessness of the experience for non-Italian speakers.
Despite minor language barriers in some media, the NFC passport is a testament to the museum's commitment to modern exhibition techniques. It transforms a historical narrative into an active exploration, making the complex topic of emigration more accessible and memorable for visitors.
Understanding the Museum's Focus
This distinction is crucial because the museum does not primarily focus on immigration to Italy. While Italy is a destination for many migrants today, the MEI's narrative is centered on the outward movement of Italians throughout history. This perspective offers a unique insight into a significant chapter of Italian history and identity, highlighting the experiences of those who sought opportunities beyond their homeland.
Visitors interested in the broader topic of migration might find this specific focus enlightening, as it provides a deep dive into one particular, yet vast, migratory movement. It's a story of adaptation, cultural preservation, and the forging of new communities by Italians worldwide.
