If you find it closed, try to knock or ask the museum nearby, they might help you find the guardian to open it or inform you about the schedule. The ones on the door did not seem correct to me. At the beginning of June, during the week, it was tourist-free. It was a marvellous and peaceful moment.
The abbey was founded in 1004 by St. Nilus of Rossano, a monk of Byzantine descent. It has remained in continuous operation since then. It is the only one of the Italo-Greek-Byzantine monasteries that has survived. Most of them gradually fell into decadence and were seized by the Kingdom of Italy when it secularized religious orders in 1866."
