They said Lake Avernus was quiet — but divers came back shaking. What they recorded wasn’t waves or engines… it was a voice, humming in a language older than Latin. Now, fishermen still hear it at night, rising from the black water like something calling for its name to be answered. Would you dare to listen? Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Lake Avernus for its tranquil atmosphere, historical significance, and natural beauty, making it a peaceful escape. While some note the presence of decaying fish and limited amenities, the overall experience is highly recommended for its unique blend of myth, history, and serene landscapes. Reddit

"Ancient Greeks called Lago d’Averno the mouth of hell because passing birds were suffocated by the fumes. The lake was turned into part of a naval base by Cornelius Agrippa after he cut a canal. Emperor Nero furthered this by building a canal lined with colonnades.

Ruins surround the lake, including the Temple of Apollo which is currently being renovated and is covered with no trespassing tape and remains of a dome building which is suspected to have been as big as the Roman Pantheon.

If you gaze into the water, you can visibly see steps going down and leading somewhere…

There is nothing marked on the trail about whether excavations are being done of the water or the nearby dome and Sibylline cave.

A walk around the lake is tranquil. There are many agro tourism places open for lunch on weekends with prices ranging from €30-40 per person.

Birds, ducks and turtles are the most popular creatures here. It may be worthwhile for the government to look into what is killing all of the fish in the lake as the stench is awful and one can only walk a few feet without being Greeted by stinky, belly up, rotting fish who have drifted toward the shore."

"A Fascinating Glimpse into Myth and History

Lake Avernus is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, mythology, or just enjoying a beautiful natural setting. This crater lake, formed in a dormant volcano, was once believed to be the entrance to the underworld!

What I loved:
* The atmosphere: Even knowing the myths aren't true, there's a definite sense of mystery and ancient power here. It's incredibly peaceful and evocative.
* Historical remnants: You can see ruins of temples and structures from the Roman era, adding another layer of interest.
* Great for walking: The path around the lake is easy to follow and provides stunning views. Perfect for a leisurely stroll or a jog.
* Nearby attractions: The Sibyl's Cave is a short distance away and worth exploring as well.

Things to keep in mind:
* Accessibility: While the main path is fairly level, some areas might be challenging for those with mobility issues.
* Amenities: There are a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but it's not overly commercialized.
* Seasonal changes: I visited in the spring and it was lovely, but I imagine it could get quite hot in summer.
Overall, Lake Avernus is a unique and memorable place. It's a fascinating blend of natural beauty, history, and legend. Highly recommended!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Myth and Mystery of Lake Avernus

Lake Avernus holds a significant place in ancient mythology, famously known as the gateway to the underworld. Ancient Greeks believed that the fumes rising from the lake were so toxic that birds flying overhead would perish, hence its name, derived from the Greek 'aornos' meaning 'birdless'. Instagram This mystical reputation made it a focal point for rituals and legends, including connections to the goddess Hecate and the hero Aeneas's descent into the underworld. The eerie atmosphere, amplified by its volcanic origins and the surrounding dark, dense woods, fueled these ancient beliefs. InstagramReddit

Today, while the toxic fumes are largely gone, the lake retains an aura of mystery. Visitors often report a sense of ancient power and tranquility. The surrounding landscape, with its volcanic crater and historical remnants, continues to evoke a sense of wonder and connection to the past. Reddit The dark, still waters themselves are said to hold secrets, with some claiming to see submerged structures or hear faint sounds from its depths. InstagramReddit

Exploring the Roman Legacy

The area around Lake Avernus was strategically important to the Romans, who transformed it into a naval base. Cornelius Agrippa, a general under Augustus, dredged a canal to connect the lake to the sea, creating a vital military port. Reddit This period saw the construction of significant structures, remnants of which can still be seen today.

Key archaeological sites include the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, a testament to the religious significance of the area, and the remains of a large domed building, speculated to have been a temple or bathhouse, comparable in scale to the Pantheon. Reddit The Sibyl's Cave, a nearby archaeological site associated with the Cumaean Sibyl, further adds to the historical richness of the region. Reddit These ruins offer a tangible link to the past, allowing visitors to walk among the echoes of Roman engineering and spiritual practices. Reddit

Nature and Wildlife Encounters

Beyond its historical and mythological significance, Lake Avernus is a haven for local wildlife. The tranquil waters and surrounding vegetation provide a habitat for various species, making it a pleasant spot for nature observation. Reddit Visitors frequently report seeing birds, ducks, and turtles in and around the lake. Reddit

The walking path around the lake is ideal for leisurely strolls where you can enjoy the natural scenery and observe these creatures in their environment. While the lake is beautiful, it's worth noting that there have been reports of fish die-offs, which can sometimes affect the water's appearance and smell. Reddit Despite this, the presence of diverse birdlife and other small animals continues to make Lake Avernus an appealing destination for nature enthusiasts. Reddit
