What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors describe Lake Fusaro as an enchanted and magical place, particularly praising the architectural gem, Casina Vanvitelliana. The historical significance, from Roman times to Bourbon royalty, is a major draw. However, some find the surrounding areas less appealing and can be disappointing.
"Nothing compares to this enchanted and magical lake. It was house to hunting lodge named La Casina Vanvitelliana, a XVIII architectural gem, designed by the engineer and architect Carlo Vanvitelli during the Royal House of Burbon & Kingdom of the two Sicilies. Ancient population and still now they breed delicious mussels in this unique protected area."

"To the Romans, modern-day Lake Fusaro was known as Palus Acherusia which best translates as Acheron's Marsh ("palus" meaning swamp, fen, marsh, the idea of a shallow reedy lake). Acheron was one of the mythological rivers of the Underworld, since this whole area of the Phlegrean Fields was thought by the Romans and the Greek colonists before them as a living embodiemnt of the Underworld, if not the entrance. Regards this particular lagoon, on its east side are hot springs that still flow into it - and these surely must be what what Virgil had in mind when he describes "tenebrosa palus Acheronte refuso" - "the dark marsh into which the Acheron spills over".
The shoreline was slightly different in antiquity. In the south-west corner an outlet to the sea was created on the country estate of Servilius Vatia. This channel, running through a groce of plance trees, was stocked with fish that the tides washed daily. Both the channel (modernised) and the villa (remains) are still in evidence."
