"Beautiful porta surrounded by lots of historic buildings"

Rob Wirz

"The Porta alle Silici was the main entrance gate through the medieval fortification walls. It connects the Cittavecchia and Cittannova districts. Approaching from the cathedral, the coat of arms of Siena (Balzana) can be seen across the passageway. On the other side, an inscription is inscribed, referring to the construction of the fortress in 1337. Square openings can be seen in the vault, from which boiling oil was once poured or stones were thrown for defense."
