Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Ponte di Moncalieri Po's historical significance and its dramatic past of being rebuilt after floods. The bridge's illumination during festivals is a major highlight, creating a beautiful spectacle. However, some find the presence of graffiti on older sections detracts from the historical charm.

"This historic bridge, repeatedly swept away by floods, rebuilt, moved... is now beautifully illuminated for festivals and events."

Mariarita Anselmi

"In the Early Middle Ages, Moncalieri occupied an important defensive position on the bend of the Po River, between the hill and the river, and the village of Testona controlled traffic coming from southern Piedmont and Liguria on the Genoa highway.

To connect it to the Stradone di Francia, avoiding crossing Turin, a stone bridge with six arches and seven piers was built in 1196, perhaps by the same order of the Knights Templar, who then held custody of it until 1312, when it passed to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.

Rebuilt several times after the floods of 1425, 1454, and 1700, it was later extended to Borgo Navile, south of the old town, but was further damaged by subsequent floods, finally collapsing in 1939, resulting in numerous casualties.

It was then decided to rebuild it further south, deemed safer, with just five arches and four sturdy piers. Thus, in 1941, the current bridge was inaugurated. It retained its original name and withstood all subsequent floods, thanks in part to the reinforcement of its banks and breaches.

The new, modern bridge on Via Martiri della Libertà was built on the site of the old Templar Bridge to accommodate the ever-increasing traffic, but the Templar name remained on the masonry bridge on Corso Trieste."

Mauro Eugenio Rattazzi

"Beautiful and panoramic, little regard for the pylons, always loaded with unremoved wood. Typical river fauna, rich and varied, herons and coypus to photograph."

The Enduring Spirit of the Templar Bridge

The Ponte di Moncalieri Po is more than just a crossing; it's a symbol of resilience. Its history is a dramatic saga of construction, destruction by floods, and repeated rebuilding. The original stone bridge, built around 1200 and possibly by the Knights Templar, stood for centuries before succumbing to the Po's power. This cycle of destruction and reconstruction, particularly evident in the 15th and 18th centuries, highlights the challenges of building in harmony with a powerful river. The current iteration, inaugurated in 1951, stands as a testament to modern engineering's ability to withstand nature's forces, a stark contrast to its more vulnerable predecessors. Reddit

While the current bridge on Via Martiri della Libertà serves modern traffic needs, the name 'Templar Bridge' often refers to the masonry bridge on Corso Trieste, the site of the original. This older bridge, though beautiful and panoramic, has unfortunately become a canvas for graffiti artists, a point of contention for some visitors who lament the defacement of historical structures. Despite this, the river fauna, including herons and coypus, continues to thrive, offering a natural spectacle that complements the historical narrative. Reddit

Experiencing the Ponte di Moncalieri Po involves appreciating its layered history. Whether you're drawn to the engineering marvels, the historical echoes of the Templars, or the natural beauty of the Po River, the bridge offers a unique glimpse into Moncalieri's past and its enduring relationship with the river.

Capturing the Magic: Photography at the Bridge

The Ponte di Moncalieri Po offers diverse photographic opportunities, from historical architecture to vibrant natural life. The most spectacular visual moments occur during local festivals when the bridge is adorned with illuminations. These events transform the structure into a dazzling spectacle, perfect for capturing dramatic night shots. Checking local event calendars is key to timing your visit for these magical displays. Reddit

Beyond the festive lights, the bridge's historical architecture itself is a compelling subject. The masonry arches and piers tell a story of centuries of construction and resilience. For nature photographers, the banks of the Po River near the bridge are a haven for river fauna. Keep an eye out for herons and coypus, which provide excellent subjects for wildlife photography, especially during the quieter hours of early morning or late afternoon. Reddit

When photographing the older sections, be aware that some areas may feature graffiti. While this can be a point of concern for some, it also adds a layer of contemporary urban art to the historical backdrop. Remember to always be respectful of the environment and any local regulations when taking photos.
