What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Tenuta Colombara for its authentic and evocative experience, highlighting the moving historical insights into rice field workers and the high quality of Acquerello rice. The genuine atmosphere and knowledgeable guides contribute to a memorable visit, though tours are primarily in Italian.
"Piemonte region, north Italy. Special tour, conducted in Italian, of famous, premium brand producer of Canaroli rice. Aquerello brand of Canaroli rice coveted by Italian chefs. Historical buildings tell story of this agricultural estate. Rice fields fed by waters of River Po. Tenuta Colombia estate housed families, workers, horses, milk cows. It had schools for rice workers' children. Po River valley here settled by French monks who brought rice cultivation centuries ago.
Old time rice field workers comprised of young women. These young women worked 12-14 hrs a day, barefoot and standing in water up their calves. They cleaned out aquatic weeds and planted seedlings in the standing water. Hard work, subsistence pay for young women born into farm laborer families.
Post WWII, these rice field workers agitated for reduced working days & hours. It is believed that as many as 64,000 young women at one time comprised this work force. Previously, some rice workers blocked Milano trains by laying down on station railway tracks. Clashed with local authorities to get better hours and barely minimal pay.
Today. Peek inside modern day factory. Advanced machinery & up-to-date agricultural systems now offer this special biological rice."
