Day Fifteen in Japan (Part Two)- If one gate wasn’t enough then two would do I guess haha. The Todai-ji Chumon (Central Gate) was massive, saw the Todai-ji Kondo Hakkaku Toro (Bronze Light). Of course the Todai-ji Temple and everything in it was gigantic! We took a nice LUNCH BREAK back at the Airbnb and then went to the Nijo Castle for a Cherry Blosson Exhibit.

The presence of Agyo and Ungyo statues further enhances the gate's protective symbolism, common in Buddhist temple architecture. Many visitors find the gate to be a breathtaking introduction to the wonders that lie within the Todai-ji complex, making it a crucial part of the overall experience. Reddit

Guardian Statues: Protectors of the Sacred

The Chumon Gate is famously guarded by the Four Heavenly Kings (Shitenno), powerful deities from Buddhist mythology. These imposing figures are strategically placed to protect the temple from malevolent forces and to bless visitors. Each king represents a cardinal direction and possesses unique attributes and iconography, contributing to the gate's formidable presence. Reddit

In addition to the Four Heavenly Kings, the gate often features Agyo and Ungyo statues. These are typically depicted as fierce, muscular figures, one with its mouth open (Agyo) and the other with its mouth closed (Ungyo). They symbolize the beginning and end of all things and are a common feature at the entrances of Buddhist temples, reinforcing the sense of spiritual protection and the cyclical nature of existence.
