"This is by far the creepiest shrine I’ve been to. Absolutely gorgeous but really unnerving, especially on a quiet, foggy day. You have to go up the tall staircase and around the central shrine itself to see all the Inari statues (Hearn’s favorites are on the right). Something about the atmosphere feels really ancient here, helped by the fact one of the neighbors clearly has some sort of chicken coop nearby, and there’s a very talkative cat that lives in the bamboo."

Samuel Goldberg

"This little shrine is easy to miss but worth a look. Lafcadio Hearn loved the statues which are still standing, and the city's main festival performs dances here annual."

Avery Morrow

"A quiet, picturesque Inari shrine with numerous stone statues of the agricultural fox god, tucked away on the far side of Matsue Castle. Worth the extra walk."
