What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Karurusu Onsen is praised for its exceptionally soft and mellow hot spring water, offering a tranquil escape from busier resorts. Visitors appreciate the clean, renovated interiors and the peaceful riverside setting. However, some find the tatami smell strong, and noise from the river or exhaust fans can be disruptive at night.
"I was here during summer to Noboribetsu and stopped by before heading to lake Toya. It is open to public until 4pm. Make your payment of 500 yen at the entrance and head to B1 for onsen via the lift. As tourist, this place feels like a secret tranquil onsen."

"If you like the smell of tatami, you will like this hotel. I don't like the smell of tatami, for me it smells strongly of straw and grass. You can't open the window at night, because of the loud noise of falling water in the river. The exhaust hood works noisily, you can't fall asleep with it. The onsen is good, the water is clean, there are pools inside with a comfortable temperature of 39-40, 41. Outside 41-42 the water is very hot, it feels hotter than 42. You need to take towels from the room, and all other accessories except shampoo, gel, conditioner. Lockers with keys do not work.
Dinner is different for everyone, you need to ask in advance whether you will have seafood, or you need to pay extra for it, since Booking gave us a dinner that did not quite suit us. The audibility in the rooms is strong, but here it depends on your luck with the neighbors. Overall, an interesting experience, but this was the first time I slept on a tatami, and I don't know if I want to again. The service is good, everything is clean. But I could smell grass and hay in the hallway and in the room."

"This famous hot spring has a truly mellow and soft texture, and while it's not flashy, you can definitely feel the quality of the spring water.
I stayed at a large hot spring resort in Noboribetsu, but the water felt a bit thin and the crowds were tiring, so I didn't enjoy the hot springs, and so I came here. It was the right decision.
There's nothing around, but I was able to enjoy the hot springs in peace and quiet, which was great. I was worried because I'd heard the water would be hot, but it wasn't at all; at 41-42 degrees, it was just the right temperature for me. The faint green tea scent was soothing. The open-air bath was especially great. The older staff seemed a bit unfriendly, but the younger ones were very nice. I'd definitely like to come again.
*Sakura Umayu shampoo, conditioner, and hair dryers were provided. Rental towels are available. Toiletries and other skin lotions are not available, so bring your own."
