What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Katawagahama Lakeside Campsite for its magical lake, clear waters, and the exceptional service from guides during activities like kayaking. The friendly staff and beautiful natural surroundings, including sunset views from the nearby pebble beach, are significant highlights. However, some guests find the limited shower facilities and the value proposition of certain camping zones to be drawbacks.
"We joined their afternoon kayaking tour and had such a fun time!!!!!!!! Our kayaking guide is a gentle but yet fun loving young guy who took great care of us. The weather wasn't on our side to begin with and our guide proceeded with great caution to ensure everyone's safety which is very much appreciated.
The lake itself is magical with pure, clear water, but can be a bit wavy at certain points. The scene is magnificent and our guide helped took so many pictures for us and he sure knows how to get the best angle for everyone. We love this kayaking journey and would love to join their forest hiking next time!!!!! Love the genki Team!"

"We were there on Friday stayed at auto camp site, got a spot closest to the exit & lake since there weren’t a lot of people around, place was nice with lots of trees & shaded. Reception staffs were polite and friendly, easy check in and out. Was a bit worried about the coin shower room (only 1 shower room onsite) but was surprised it’s easy to use and with hot water too. Just to note that reception/admin building doesn’t offer SUP/kayak etc rental and the water sports activities/tours require booking in advance."

"A basic campground. We used the free tent zone, which wasn’t bad but lacked free features for the high price we paid. There are randomly dispersed fire pit cooking stations as well as 3 cooking and washing stations. There is only one washroom and a single coin shower for the whole campground which meant waiting for a shower even when it’s quiet. If you have a full setup (tables, chairs, etc) it will be okay but as we paid 3000jpy a night it was not good value. The saving grace was the wonderful super friendly staff and the late opening hours of the office until 9pm."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For camping, the shaded areas with trees offer a comfortable base. While the single shower facility might require some patience, the overall friendly atmosphere and proximity to a pebble beach for playtime make it a suitable spot for a family getaway. Consider bringing extra entertainment for downtime, as the focus is on outdoor exploration.
💰 Budget Travelers
Opting for day trips rather than overnight stays can also be a budget-friendly approach. Focus on enjoying the free amenities like the pebble beach and the scenic views. If participating in paid activities, compare prices and consider if the experience aligns with your budget. The campsite's accessibility via bus also makes it a cost-effective destination.

Outdoor Activities at Katawagahama
Beyond kayaking, the campsite also organizes forest hiking and rafting excursions. These activities provide opportunities to explore the surrounding landscapes and experience the tranquility of the region. However, it's crucial to note that these popular tours often book up in advance, especially during peak seasons. Visitors are strongly advised to make reservations early to avoid disappointment and ensure they can participate in their desired adventures.
When planning your visit, consider that the reception building does not handle rentals for equipment like SUPs or kayaks; these are part of the organized tours that require pre-booking. This emphasis on pre-booked activities highlights the campsite's focus on guided experiences that maximize visitor enjoyment and safety.
Camping Experience and Facilities
However, campers should be aware of the facility limitations. The most frequently mentioned point is the single coin shower room available for the entire campground. While functional and providing hot water, this can lead to queues, particularly when the site is busy. For cooking and cleaning, there are three designated stations, along with randomly dispersed fire pit cooking areas. While the natural setting is a significant draw, some visitors have noted that the value for money in the free tent zone might be questionable given the limited facilities, especially when compared to the price paid.
