Visitors find the Manyo Historical Museum a great place to learn about the Manyoshu and Otomo no Yakamochi, appreciating the historical context and the poetic landscapes. "The hours listed here are not accurate. I arrived at about 5:45 pm on a Friday (Oct 18) and they were closed. Check at Takaoka station tourist info to confirm when open before going out of your way to get here."

"It stands at a site associated with Otomo no Yakamochi, the editor of the oldest collection of waka poetry, the Manyoshu, where he served as Etchu no Kami.
By the way, his workplace, the Etchu Chufu, is thought to have been located near the nearby Shokoji Temple (a National Treasure). Traveling all the way from Nara in an era before cars and bullet trains, must have been quite a feat! (lol)
In fact, one-tenth of the 4,516 poems in the Manyoshu are poems by its editor, Yakamochi himself. And half of those, 223 poems, were intensively composed during the mere five years he served as Etchu no Kami. These materials are the main exhibits at the history museum.
The location overlooking the beautiful Toyama Bay and the majestic Tateyama mountain range, along with the local culture, customs, nature, and climate, were all so unique and fascinating that perhaps Yakamochi, just 29 years old, was deeply inspired to create (lol).
He also had a fulfilling personal life. At the time, long-distance travel was dangerous, so it was common for people to work away from home, but his cousin and wife, Sakanoue no Oiratsume, came to Etchu toward the end of his term.
His childhood friend and wife came to him, regardless of the danger, saying, "I can't leave her alone!" Of course, he was thrilled. No wonder he wrote a ton of poems out of joy (lol). Real-life happy people, explode!
I believe the Manyoshu, the first and greatest collection of waka poetry, expresses honest feelings without regard for skill or culture, regardless of social status, from emperor to peasant.
"If you don't dwell on misfortune, it seems better to drink a glass of murky sake."
This is a poem by Otomo no Tabito, father of Ise no Yakamochi, included in the Manyoshu. It means, "If you don't worry about things that are pointless, it seems better to drink a glass of sake."
This song has helped me a lot in my life (lol). Humans haven't evolved much in 1000 years. That's probably why people relate to the Manyoshu so much.
I really enjoyed being able to immerse myself in the deeper world of the Manyoshu here."
