What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kaneishi Castle Garden is a designated National Place of Scenic Beauty, praised for its tranquil atmosphere and historical significance, particularly the Kinseki-kan residence. While some find it smaller than expected, visiting in autumn for the foliage or combining it with the adjacent Banshoin for a discount enhances the experience.
"Built around the Kinseki-kan, the former residence of the Tsushima lord during the Edo period, this garden cleverly utilizes the natural terrain and rock formations, channeling clear streams to create ponds, waterfalls, and winding paths, embodying the essence of the Japanese art of borrowed scenery. The garden's distinct seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring and maples in autumn, complemented by lush green pines and cypresses and unusually shaped rocks, create a tranquil and profound atmosphere.
A designated National Place of Scenic Beauty, Kinseki Castle Gardens is not only a precious cultural heritage but also a tranquil place where one can experience the rich history and appreciate the harmonious natural beauty of Japanese gardens."

"[Nagasaki Prefecture - Tsushima's Famous Landmarks: Kinishi Castle and Kinishi Castle Gardens]
Kinishi Castle was the residence of the Sō clan, the feudal lords of the Tsushima domain. Built in 1528 during the Sengoku period, it was a flat-topped castle without a main tower. Instead, the main entrance turret gate, built by the feudal lord at the time, Sō Yoshizane, in 1669 (Kanbun 9) during the Edo period, served as a castle tower. The current turret gate was restored in 1990.
Although there is a fee, we also recommend visiting the gardens of Kinishi Castle. While not large, it is a Japanese garden with a tranquil atmosphere.

"Passing through the turret of Kaneishi Castle🏯, you will come to the nationally designated scenic spot "Kyu-Kaneishi Garden"🈯️, built in 1690 and surrounded by camellia flowers. It is thought to have been modeled after the east coast of Tsushima, and the waterways and stone walls are well maintained, but the best time to visit is in autumn when the autumn leaves🍁 and fresh greenery shine🌱."
