Reviews Summary

Visitors generally find the Fukujuen Uji Tea Workshop to be an interesting, hands-on experience, particularly the matcha grinding class and the restaurant's cha soba. However, some reviews suggest the workshop could offer more cultural context and engagement, with staff sometimes appearing rushed. The shop's selection is appreciated, though prices can be a deterrent for some. Reddit

"The outlet is very quiet, but the making tea experience session is fully booked when we want to register. There are.many variety of tea and there is a mini studio where you can watch a video about tea types and processes which is quite interesting. Too bad they don't give samples of the tea, while the prices are not cheap. So we are hesitant to buy more."

Ellen Brigitta

"I attended a matcha-making class and unfortunately found the experience underwhelming. The staff seemed more focused on cleaning up after the previous session than engaging with our group, despite us arriving on time. Instructions were very minimal—after briefly showing us the tea leaves and how to use the grinding machine, we were left alone for about 10 minutes with no further guidance or context.

The room was nearly empty with just the four of us, which could have been a great opportunity for a more personalized experience, but sadly it felt rushed and impersonal. There was no background shared about the history or cultural significance of matcha, which I had hoped would be part of the class. Toward the end, more guests arrived late, and the staff seemed to be rushing through the process again with them before returning to cleaning duties.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this experience unless you’re just looking to briefly grind tea leaves and whisk a bowl in silence. If you're genuinely interested in matcha or Japanese tea culture, I suggest finding a well-reviewed tea ceremony experience instead.

"Went to their restaurant for lunch and had cha soba. The broth and tea were nice. I walked in for the matcha making class and they let me sign up for a later session that day. It was funny because as I was grinding the matcha I realized that I paid to do hard labour. It was a great experience that makes me appreciate matcha!"
