Reviews Summary

Sipadan offers world-class diving with incredible marine life, particularly at Hanging Gardens, but the resort experience can be inconsistent. While many praise the diving and friendly staff, some reviews highlight issues with dated facilities, poor maintenance, and average food quality. The environmental impact of local communities is also a concern for some visitors.

"We had an amazing stay at Sipadan Water Village Resort. The 2-day diving experience (6 dives) was fantastic – beautiful dive sites with great visibility and incredible marine life. The food, especially dinner, was delicious with plenty of variety. The room was spacious, comfortable, and cozy with a calming sea view. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. Truly an unforgettable experience, highly recommended! 🌊🐠✨"

"I stayed at Sipadan Water Village Resort after discovering it through ADEX Asia Dive Expo. The flyer looked promising and I had high expectations, but unfortunately, the actual experience was far from ideal.

While the staff on the island were generally friendly, they lacked initiative, motivation, and efficiency. Outside of the arrival and departure times, we barely saw any staff around. Even though the resort had very low occupancy during our stay, they insisted we wait until after 2 PM to check in, showing no flexibility or hospitality.

The restaurant food was very average — mostly cheap seafood and processed items. The flavours were decent, but the variety was extremely limited and not up to the standard one would expect from a dive resort.

The water around the island is crystal clear with plenty of small fish, and the dive sites nearby are quite good. We noticed many divers from other resorts coming to the same area. However, the local Bajau community on the island seemed to lack environmental awareness — we often saw plastic bags and even diapers floating in the sea, which was disappointing.

There were also no entertainment or activity options on the island apart from diving, eating, and sleeping. For a place marketed as a resort, the lack of facilities or engaging experiences made the stay feel quite dull.

Overall, I was disappointed with the food, service, and lack of recreational options. The resort has potential due to its location, but it needs major improvements in service training, environmental care, and guest experience to be worth the price."

"Very poor maintain. Don’t full by the advertisement. The resort and dive center were very under run and very poor in maintenance.
Location is good with the pristine water and shore. But it is poorly ma’am age resort. Inferior broken/ torn dive equipment. Dive master dragging my own equipment to the boat.
Towel service if u collect late there is no replenishment.
Food were so so very limited variety probably the worst in the island. They charge additionally if u bring your own soft drinks and even mineral water.
Water pressure was disaster with water flowing unevenly. No TV in room if you are not for diving avoid this resort. Boat were late for 2 days of diving even we were being warm to be 15 mins early. Very bad management"

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

While Sipadan is primarily a diving destination, families can still enjoy the experience. Many resorts on nearby islands like Mabul offer snorkeling trips and have house reefs accessible from the shore, which are great for younger or less experienced swimmers. The boat rides themselves can be an adventure for kids. Ensure your chosen resort has family-friendly amenities and can cater to any specific dietary needs. Reddit

Focus on resorts that offer a good balance between diving opportunities for adults and engaging activities for children. Some resorts might have pools or offer cultural insights into the local Bajau community. Remember that the journey to Sipadan can be long, so pack plenty of entertainment for the travel days. Reddit

💰 Budget Travelers

Diving Sipadan is not typically a budget destination due to permit costs and the logistics involved. However, budget-conscious travelers can look for packages that offer more basic accommodation and fewer dives per day. Staying on Mabul or Kapalai islands and taking day trips to Sipadan can sometimes be more economical than staying at higher-end resorts. Reddit

Consider traveling during the shoulder seasons (outside of peak months) when prices might be slightly lower. Also, compare packages from different operators carefully, paying attention to what is included (permits, gear rental, meals) to avoid hidden costs. Bringing your own basic dive gear can also save on rental fees. Reddit

📸 Photography Enthusiasts

Sipadan is a photographer's paradise, both above and below the water. For underwater shots, a wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture the dramatic drop-offs, schooling fish, and large pelagics like whale sharks and manta rays. Instagram+1

Bring extra batteries and memory cards, as you'll be taking a lot of photos! Consider a good underwater housing for your camera or action camera. For topside photography, the sunsets and the stilted villages of Mabul offer unique perspectives. Remember to be respectful and avoid disturbing marine life with excessive flash use. Instagram

The Sipadan Permit System Explained

The Sipadan permit system is a critical element for any diver planning a trip. Due to its status as a protected marine park and its incredible biodiversity, access to Sipadan is strictly controlled to minimize environmental impact. Only a limited number of permits are issued daily, and these are allocated to resorts and dive operators based in the surrounding areas, primarily on Mabul and Kapalai islands, as well as some liveaboards. This scarcity means that securing a permit is often the most challenging part of planning your dive trip. Resorts typically include the permit in their dive packages, and it's essential to book these packages months, if not a year, in advance, especially for popular travel dates. The permit fee itself is relatively modest, but the demand far outstrips supply, making advance booking non-negotiable. Reddit

Understanding this system is key to a smooth planning process. When researching resorts, always confirm that the Sipadan permit is included in their package and inquire about the booking lead time. Some operators might offer packages that include a certain number of days diving at Sipadan, while others might have a lottery system or prioritize longer stays. Be aware that while you might book a package, the final allocation of permits is managed by the authorities, and while rare, last-minute changes can occur. Therefore, flexibility and early booking are your best allies when aiming to dive this world-class destination. Reddit

Navigating Dive Resorts and Operator Quality

Choosing the right dive resort or operator is paramount for a fulfilling Sipadan experience. While the allure of Sipadan is undeniable, the quality of service, dive gear, and overall management can significantly impact your trip. Online reviews often highlight a stark contrast between expectations and reality, with some guests reporting excellent service and well-maintained facilities, while others lament poor maintenance, outdated equipment, and inefficient management. Reddit

It's advisable to thoroughly research potential dive operators. Look for PADI 5-Star IDC centers or those with a strong reputation for safety and customer service. Pay close attention to recent reviews regarding the condition of dive equipment (regulators, BCDs, tanks), the professionalism and knowledge of dive masters, and the efficiency of boat operations. Some travelers suggest bringing your own essential dive gear if you have concerns about rental quality. Furthermore, consider the overall resort experience – while diving is the main draw, factors like food quality, room comfort, and staff friendliness contribute to the overall enjoyment. TikTokReddit

The Environmental Reality of Sipadan

Sipadan is a jewel of marine biodiversity, but like many popular dive destinations, it faces environmental challenges. While the dive sites themselves are generally well-managed and protected, some visitors have noted issues with litter and plastic pollution in the surrounding waters and on nearby inhabited islands. This is often attributed to local communities and waste management practices, rather than the dive operations themselves. Reddit

Responsible tourism is key to preserving Sipadan for future generations. Divers are encouraged to practice 'no-trace' principles: avoid touching coral or marine life, do not feed the fish, and take all your trash with you. Choosing eco-conscious dive operators who actively participate in conservation efforts can also make a difference. Being aware of these environmental aspects allows visitors to be more mindful and contribute positively to the protection of this extraordinary marine ecosystem. Instagram
