Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the breathtaking natural beauty and the awe-inspiring presence of the volcanoes, calling it a 'GREAT place to visit' and a 'lifetime experience.' The park offers magnificent views and a chance to connect with nature. However, some find it challenging to reach and note that facility maintenance is minimal, describing it more as a national forest. Reddit

"It is suuch a GREAT place to visit when in CDMX!! Highly recommend it.
Although it is extremely hard to reach.

The cheapest option to get there is to hop on a bus in CDMX and drive to Amecameca, from there you need to take a local taxi (no uber available) up to the entrance.

We just rented an Uber from Mexico City to the entrance and he just waited for us the whole day and drove us back. Of course we gave him a nice amount of money.

The third option is to just rent a car (if you’re brave enough to drive in Mexico City)

From the entrance you can hike up to La Joya at 4000 meters which is a pretty easy hike. From La Joya you are able to hike further up and summit Iztaccihuatl.

BUT!! We didn’t feel really safe hiking.
We were just scared that someone was waiting for us in the bushes. We heard some horror storys.

Just always look back and around you and hike in groups. NOT alone!!"

"It's an amazing place to visit. Great views, panoramic experiences, an incredible weather.
I'm not an expert in this area, so I recommend to check out the instructions from a professional to the ascending walk: be prepared to walk a lot; don't take heavy backpacks.
You'll enjoy a magnificent and mesmerizing encounter with nature."

Luis Barrera Morán

"Starting point for hiking the national park. Register at the center first where you will find information about the park flora and fauna. Bathrooms in the parking area for 10 pesos."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legend of Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl

The Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park is not just a geological marvel but also a place steeped in ancient lore. The two majestic volcanoes are central to a tragic Nahua tale of love and sacrifice. Legend has it that Iztaccíhuatl, a princess, fell in love with Popocatépetl, a warrior. When Popocatépetl went to war, a rival spread the false news of his death. Heartbroken, Iztaccíhuatl died of grief. Upon his return and discovery of her demise, Popocatépetl carried her body to the mountains, where they were transformed into the volcanoes we see today. Iztaccíhuatl, the 'sleeping woman,' lies dormant, while Popocatépetl, the 'smoking mountain,' still breathes fire, symbolizing his eternal watch over his beloved. Instagram+1

This romantic narrative adds a layer of cultural depth to the natural beauty of the park, making it a place of both awe-inspiring landscapes and poignant storytelling. Visitors often feel a profound connection to the land, inspired by these ancient myths that have shaped the region's identity. The park's educational center often touches upon these stories, enriching the visitor experience beyond just the physical trek. Instagram

Navigating the High Altitudes

Visiting Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park means venturing into high-altitude territory, with La Joya base camp at 4000 meters and the summit of Iztaccíhuatl reaching 5320 meters. Altitude sickness, or soroche, can affect anyone regardless of fitness level. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. It's crucial to acclimatize gradually by spending time at lower elevations before attempting strenuous hikes. Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol and caffeine is also vital. Reddit

When hiking, listen to your body and don't push yourself too hard. If you experience severe symptoms, descend immediately. Many visitors find that taking it slow, resting frequently, and being mindful of the thin air significantly enhances their experience. The park's natural beauty is best enjoyed when you are feeling well, so prioritize your health and safety at these impressive elevations. InstagramReddit

Hiking and Adventure Opportunities

The park is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a range of activities from gentle walks to challenging mountaineering. The hike to La Joya is a popular choice, providing accessible trails and stunning vistas of both volcanoes. For experienced hikers, the ascent to the summit of Iztaccíhuatl is a significant achievement, requiring good physical condition and proper gear. The trails are often narrow and can be demanding, but the reward is an unparalleled sense of accomplishment and breathtaking panoramic views. TikTokInstagram+1

Beyond hiking, the park is also a destination for mountain biking, with trails that can be challenging due to the terrain and altitude.
