Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Blue River Provincial Park for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the unique drowned forest and vibrant river. Many highlight the enjoyable activities like hiking, biking, swimming, and picnicking, noting its accessibility for all. However, some birdwatchers express frustration with park access times and limited information for English speakers.

"Independent birders beware: the park is not open until eight and the first shuttle into the forest is not until nine (arrives at the forest habitat @9:30). YOU CANNOT DRIVE IN ALL THE WAY TO THE FOREST!!!! Your best bet to see kagu displaying is with a guide that has access earlier than the official opening. Apparently camping is still possible, but not close to the forest. In theory if you brought camping supplies + rented a bicycle for multiple days you could get to forest early. The park has terrible information for English speakers. Also audio playback are not allowed despite this not being written down anywhere in English. In general a shitty managed park where birders are a complete afterthought that has some excellent birds you can only view at the wrong times of day. Generally not worth the visit under the current restrictions and approach."

"Over 1 hour drive from noumea, ossum views on way, Staff at reception was very helpful, they can guide you in english also. You will have a map. MUST HAVE IN YOUR BUCKET LIST."

"Must visit if in New Caledonia! We hired the mountain bikes and did a few of the hikes along the way. Had lunch in the middle of the river and then swam in it afterwards. Great accessibility for all fitness levela and handicapped.
For those that like camping and hiking, I believe there is free camping and a great 7 day hike which I hope to do next time.
This place should be more popular than it is and we'll worth a day."

Reddit However, accessing prime viewing spots can be challenging due to park regulations. The park officially opens at 8 AM, but the first shuttle to the forest habitat, where kagus are often found, doesn't depart until 9 AM, arriving at 9:30 AM. For those dedicated to spotting the kagu, engaging a local guide is highly recommended. Guides often have access to the park earlier than the general public or know specific locations and times for better sightings. Reddit Alternatively, if you're an avid camper and have your own bicycle, you could potentially arrange to camp within the park and cycle to the forest habitat before official opening hours, though this requires significant planning and equipment. Reddit Remember that audio playback is reportedly not allowed, so be prepared for a quiet observation experience. Reddit
