Has anyone been to Kerosene Creek in Rotorua? I have some questions.
Is there a changing room nearby? What’s the best timing of the day to go there? Thanks in advance for your reply. And if you can recomm some good place to go in Rotorua for swimming, that would be great. Not sure if Rotorua is the place for that.
found my new favourite hot pool a few days ago (Waiotapu Thermal Vallery, near Rotorua)
There are some beautiful hot pools around the area, just be careful about sticking your head under the water due to the risk of amoebic meningitis.
👃 Be Prepared for Sulfur
The natural geothermal activity can cause a sulfur smell. It's part of the experience!
💧 Water Temperature Varies
The 'hot' water can be more 'warm.' Don't expect boiling temperatures.
One day in Rotorua
Hi, helpful people. We will have one day in Rotorua (not staying over), what would you suggest in terms of activities? Please help me prioritise! We are not that keen on touristy activities but if it's unmissable and popular, we're in! Love beautiful nature and unusual things.

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kerosene Creek offers a free, natural hot spring experience with a unique atmosphere, though it's important to note its undeveloped nature. Visitors appreciate the peaceful forest setting and the novelty of a natural hot water stream. However, many reviews mention the lack of facilities, the strong sulfur smell, and inconsistent water temperatures, leading some to find it overrated.
"The “Hot” Spring That Ain’t That Hot
So Kerosene Creek… a natural hot water stream, just 5 minutes off the main road down a bumpy gravel track. You park right by the roadside and boom there it is.
Plenty of people were soaking in there (mostly women), but I didn’t snap pics respect people’s privacy, not trying to be that creepy tourist. 😅
Now the truth: the water looks clear from above, but when you get closer, it smells like someone boiled rotten eggs for dinner.. The steps going down half broken one wrong move and you’re on sick leave with a leg cast. 🚑
The environment? Let’s just say it’s not Bali vibes… no toilets, no changing rooms. So yeah, people probably just… “handle business” out in the wild. 🌲💩
Also, there’s a giant sign warning you: Don’t dunk your head, don’t sniff the water, don’t let it up your nose. Basically: “Come swim, but at your own risk of catching something.”
And the “hot” water? More like “slightly warm.” My winter shower at home is hotter than this river. Definitely not egg boiling level, unless you’ve got a week to spare. 🍳
Overall: Cool to check off the list, but dip? Nah, I’m good. 😎
“Logan was here.. Survived the hot creek, but not the smell!”"
