The Baclayon church in Bohol was such an amazing building. Built in 1596 and becoming a church parish in 1717, it was an amazing exterior (for Aleja) and a majestic interior (for Liam). ⛪️🇵🇭 What was really interesting was that for the first 180 years it was only run by Spanish priest before the first Filipino parish priest in 1898. Unfortunately in 2013 it sustained damages from an earthquake an...

"Quick stop at Baclayon Church - still amazed me

I’m always amazed by the history and cultural importance of Baclayon Church. It’s one of those places that really makes you think how far back our history goes.

There’s no big change since the last time I visited and that was 18 years ago! I remember hearing that the bell tower collapsed during the 2013 earthquake, but thankfully it has now been restored.

I didn’t get to go inside this time as it was closed, but still happy to stop by even for a few minutes. The church, built in 1727, is one of the oldest in the country and you can really feel that when you’re there.

Short visit, but always worth a look if you’re nearby."

The Architectural Marvel of Coral Stones

Baclayon Church stands as a remarkable example of colonial-era architecture, primarily distinguished by its construction from coral stones. These stones were meticulously quarried from the sea and then painstakingly shaped and laid to form the church's robust structure. The process was labor-intensive, often involving local communities working together. The use of coral stone not only provided a durable building material but also gave the church a unique, earthy aesthetic that has weathered centuries. Instagram+1

Adding to its unique construction, the mortar used to bind these stones was famously made from the whites of millions of eggs. This traditional building technique, common in historical structures in the Philippines, created a strong and resilient bond. The church's exterior, though humble in appearance, holds immense historical and architectural value, showcasing the ingenuity of its builders. Instagram

Despite suffering damage during the devastating 2013 Bohol earthquake, the church has undergone significant restoration efforts. The resilience of its coral stone construction is evident in its ability to withstand such seismic activity, and the successful restoration ensures that this architectural marvel continues to stand as a testament to Bohol's rich heritage.
