What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Tigbauan Church for its stunning interior mosaic art and unique coral stone facade. Many highlight the intricate details and the solemn atmosphere created by the artwork. Some recent reviews note changes in the altar area's decoration, with modern additions covering some older mosaics, though the overall beauty is still highly appreciated.
"St. John of Sahagun Parish or popularly known as the Tigbauan Church is one of the oldest churches in the country. Although it is mostly rebuilt after the destructive "Lady Caycay" earthquake in 1948, its unique coral stone facade with carvings remained intact and also its churrigeresque design. The late Fr. Eleuterio Carton with the assistance of the town's creative artists way back in the 1990's beautified the interiors of the church by their painstakingly installing on the massive walls with magnificent religious mosaic art like the Stations of the Cross, scenes from the Bible and the Virgin Mary's life, so reminiscent of the ancient churches of the Roman and Byzantine periods. The religious mosaic art gave such solemn inspiration and mood for meditation just at the glimpse of those. I don't know if ever there are other churches in the country with similar art.
Yet starting in the 2020's, it's a little bit disappointing when the new church administration largely covered the grand mosaic at the altar area with a massive, lavishly-decorated modern retablo and some mosaic artworks in the other areas had been already covered with smaller retablo. I'm not in the position to criticize the church admin's renovation plans if it is for the improvement of the church's facilities starting with the installation of ceilings. Great thing that they brought back the Adoration Chapel after many years of neglect and its surroundings had also been improved and now a garden under the towering trees, a peaceful place."

"Tigbauan Church will celebrate its 450th year in 2028.
It is formally called the San Juan de Sahagun Parish Church but commonly referred to as Tigbauan Church. Founded by the Augustinians in 1575 as their second mission in Panay. Initially dedicated to Our Lady of Grace, it later was named after St John of Sahagun who was an Augustinian friar known for his preaching and promoting peace.
It is also known for the Mexican style architecture. Going in you'll find touches of gold which are ornately beautiful."
