Built in 12th century, it was reconstructed several times. The main updates were done in the 14th century, when the medieval city was surrounded by walls, and in the 16th city, when the castle was reconstructed after the earthquake (1531).
The unusual construction of the main tower can be related to the updated military necessaries of those times (16-17 centuries). In the 19th century the city lost it's importance and it's municipal status was ended."
