"Praia das Milícias – São Miguel’s Perfect Balance of Nature and Comfort
I recently visited Praia das Milícias (also called Praia Grande) near Ponta Delgada, and it’s without a doubt one of the most enjoyable beaches on São Miguel. It strikes a perfect balance between natural beauty and modern convenience.
The scenery is stunning: wide stretches of soft, dark volcanic sand, clear Atlantic water, and a view framed by lush greenery and volcanic rock. Even when it’s busy in summer, it never feels chaotic—the space and the atmosphere make it feel relaxed and welcoming.
Access is easy with free, ample parking just steps from the beach. I really appreciated the thoughtful amenities: clean showers and toilets, changing rooms, foot-washing stations, and trash bins. It’s also fully accessible, with ramps, walkways, and even amphibious beach wheelchairs, which is a big plus for families and anyone with mobility needs. Lifeguards are present during the bathing season, and the beach proudly flies the Blue Flag for safety and quality.
Praia das Milícias also caters to different kinds of visitors. You can simply relax and swim, but if you’re feeling active, it’s great for surfing, bodyboarding, or even beach volleyball and football. There’s also a small skate track near the entrance, which is a fun and unexpected touch.
There are plenty of places to eat nearby. A few steps away you’ll find beach bars like Sunset Beach or Rodinhas Balaia Snack Bar, and across the street, I stumbled upon a local favorite—Bruno’s Bar in the Edifício Populo—for an unexpectedly excellent Philly cheesesteak.
During my visit, the water was clean and swimmable, though depending on the day you might encounter some natural debris or the rare jellyfish. Still, it felt very safe and well-managed, and the lifeguards were attentive.
In short, this beach has it all—natural beauty, great facilities, family-friendly options, and a laid-back vibe. Whether you’re coming for a swim, surf, or sunset drink, Praia das Milícias is one of São Miguel’s true gems."

"The biggest beach on the southcoast, so they say. No shade. However, there are spacious areas for changing, toilets and showers. In addition there are water taps outside…"
