EXPLORE GRAHAM’S PORT WINE LODGE WITH ME… This time last year, before boarding my 7 day @vikingcruises down the Douro, I treated myself to an early birthday guided tour and the special Bicentinary tasting trio at Graham’s, one of my favourite port wine houses from my trip in 2007/8. They have a fab new tasting room, and you can check out their shop post tour with an excellent selection of ports...

"Great wine tour and tasting!
We walked up from the water's edge and that is an experience in its own right. Once at the top, the view over the city from Graham's restaurant terrace is incredible. We were lucky to find couple of places on their vintage tour. The tasting took place after the cellar tour I the vintage 1room.we had 3 port and cheese and Pastel de nata.
I would recommend the tour but better to book in advance otherwise you may need to wait or don't find room.
Our English speaking guide was very knowledgeable and articulate!"

Francesca Zuffolato

"We enjoyed the wine tasting tour very much. Learned a lot about port wine and I liked the 20 year tawny wine the best among the three offerings. The view outside is spectacular!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Port Wine Making at Graham's

Graham's Port Lodge offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional methods of port wine production. Your tour will likely guide you through the historic cellars, where you can see the massive oak vats and barrels where the wine ages. You'll learn about the unique Douro Valley terroir, the grape varietals used, and the crucial steps involved in fortification, which gives port its characteristic sweetness and higher alcohol content. The lodge itself is a working cellar, so you're experiencing the process in its authentic environment. InstagramReddit

Beyond the technicalities, the tour often delves into the history of the Graham's brand, established in 1820. You'll hear stories of the families involved and the evolution of their winemaking legacy. The guides are typically very knowledgeable and passionate, sharing insights that bring the history and the wine to life. This immersive experience provides a deeper appreciation for the quality and craftsmanship that goes into every bottle. TikTokInstagram

Key takeaways from the cellar tour include understanding the difference between various port styles like Tawny, Ruby, and Vintage, and how aging in wood or bottle affects their flavor profiles. The guides often explain the significance of the 'lagares' (traditional granite troughs) where grapes were once trodden by foot, a practice that still occurs in some premium productions. InstagramReddit

Tasting Experiences: From Basic to Vintage

Graham's Port Lodge offers a spectrum of tasting experiences to suit every palate and budget. The most accessible option is usually a standard tasting, which typically includes a selection of their well-known Tawny ports (like the 10 and 20-year-old) and often a Late Bottled Vintage (LBV). This is a great introduction to the diverse flavors of port wine. TikTokReddit

For those seeking a more in-depth and luxurious experience, premium tastings are available. These often feature older and rarer ports, including aged Tawnies (30 or 40-year-old) and sometimes even Vintage Ports from exceptional years. These higher-tier tastings are frequently paired with artisanal cheeses and traditional Portuguese pastries, enhancing the overall sensory journey. InstagramReddit

Specialty tastings, such as the 'Graham's Tasting' or the 'Vintage Room' experience, offer a curated selection of their finest wines. These are ideal for special occasions or for serious port aficionados looking to explore the pinnacle of Graham's offerings. Booking these premium options in advance is crucial, as they are often limited in availability. InstagramReddit
