What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Kozlov Val for its historical significance and excellent views of the Golden Gate. It's appreciated as a well-preserved remnant of ancient Russian fortifications and a peaceful spot for photography. Some note that it's a simple earthen structure, and its appeal lies more in its historical context and scenic outlook than elaborate features.
"An earthen rampart near the Golden Gate, the remaining part of the southwestern ancient defense system of Vladimir. Specially preserved in the 18th century as a memory of the past. A monument of ancient Russian fortification and urban development of federal significance. Kozlov Val was created under Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, when the perimeter of the ramparts around ancient Vladimir reached almost 7 kilometers, the height - 9 meters. It was stormed by Khan Batu in February 1238, and to the south of the Golden Gate, the enemies made one of the breaches in the wooden fortress wall and broke into the city. A very beautiful view of the Golden Gate and the former Trinity Old Believer Church."

"Situated near the Golden Gate, Kozlov Val is the only fragment of Vladimir's 12th-century fortifications that has survived to this day. Today, Kozlov Val is an excellent observation deck."

"Kozlov Val is an earthen rampart near the Golden Gate, the remaining part of the southwestern ancient defense system of Vladimir, a monument of ancient Russian fortification. Kozlov Val was created during the reign of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, when the perimeter of the ramparts around ancient Vladimir reached almost 7 km, the height - 9 m. In the 18th century, the foot and slopes of the collapsed ramparts were used for vegetable gardens. One of these plots of land belonged to the "trading man" (merchant) Alexei Kozlov - it is about him that the current name of the rampart is reminiscent. There is also information about other versions of the name of the rampart - Zlatovratsky, Borovetsky. The latter is again named after the merchant, Nikolai Vasilyevich Borovetsky. In the 1870s, he spent a lot of money on the arrangement of the boulevard on the rampart: a garden with a fountain, gazebos and flower beds, tables and benches was laid out there."
