This colossal volcano, with its many fissures, cinder cones and craters, stretches from Medina to Taif (near Mecca). It’s about 300 km long and 100 km wide in certain areas.
I highly recommend a trip from Jeddah across the scenic western Saudi / Hejaz mountain range in the late afternoon. About an hour before sunset pleasant and calming colours flood the ravines, gorges, hills, and expansive plains in hues of cinnamon, mottle pink, and beige.
