In 2004, residents of a small inn in Cape Town, South Africa, witnessed a bizarre incident that instilled both fear and amazement. A Renault Megane, parked with no driver and the handbrake engaged, inexplicably 'jumped' backward twice on a hill and collided with a tree. Eyewitnesses, including the inn's family and guests, were awakened by the roaring sound of the car's engine as if it were trying ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors highlight the Martello Tower as a significant historical site, crucial for understanding Simon's Town's coastal defense. While its history and preservation are appreciated, the strict requirement for advance booking can be a barrier for spontaneous visits, with some finding access difficult.

"A historical fort that protected the beach from naval invasion, the Martello Tower was restored in 1972 and proclaimed a National Monument.

Prominent citizens of Simon's Town worked to stress the importance of saving the Martello Tower upon representatives of the Historical Monuments Commission, 2 April 1959. At the time it was going to be demolished.

When the British occupied the Cape in September 1795, they did so to forestall any similar French action. The occupying troops were under the command of Major General James Craig, who was appointed Acting Governor of the Cape and who set about improving the coastal fortifications of Simon's Bay. He constructed, as part of these improvements, a large powder magazine capable of containing 980 barrels of gunpowder, (being the reserve ammunition for the Royal Naval Ships) in the near vicinity of the Southern Battery built by the Dutch and known as the 'Boeselaar Battery'. To protect this magazine as well as the rear of the Battery, he completed the construction of the Simon's Town tower in early 1796.
