What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Rhodes Memorial for its absolutely breathtaking panoramic views of Cape Town and its impressive monument architecture, making it a great spot for photography and leisurely walks. However, some reviews note that the site is poorly maintained, with graffiti and overgrown areas, and the absence of the former tea room detracts from the overall experience for some. Safety concerns are also occasionally mentioned, advising visitors to be aware of their surroundings.
"Recently visited Rhodes Memorial with friends, and it was an amazing experience! The monument itself is impressive, with beautiful statues and architecture that give it a grand, almost ancient feel. The views from the memorial are breathtaking, offering a stunning panoramic perspective of Cape Town and the surrounding mountains.
It's a great spot for a leisurely walk, and we also enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. There’s a nice restaurant nearby where you can grab a bite, and the homemade desserts are definitely worth trying!
Just a word of caution – while it's a wonderful place to visit, it's important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially if you’re visiting alone or during off-peak hours.
Overall, Rhodes Memorial is a must-see for anyone in Cape Town, especially if you love history, nature, and great views!"

"The panoramic views from Rhodes Memorial are absolutely breathtaking — on a clear day, you can see across the city, down to the Cape Flats and all the way to False Bay. It’s definitely worth stopping here if you’re already hiking in the area. The monument itself, however, is poorly maintained. Grass is growing through the stonework, parts are stained, and there’s some graffiti that hasn’t been cleaned up. Since the iconic tea room burnt down, there’s not much reason to make a special trip up here unless you’re after the view or using it as a hiking waypoint.
A word of warning: SANParks rangers stopped me for taking photos, saying I needed a permit, even though it was clearly for personal use. There’s no proper signage about this, and it seems even the rangers don’t fully understand the policy. It left a sour taste. If you’re going to enforce rules, at least make them clear to the public.
All in all, a place with historical significance and natural beauty, but it deserves better care — and better clarity for visitors."

"This used to be such an iconic place.
It's not like I used to remember it when I was younger and I'm not that old.
Now it looks sad, dry, and deserted.
With the restaurant that was there back in the days before it burnt down, there was a different feeling. More people walking up and down enjoying and absorbing the beautiful sight from above , overlooking the city.
I didn't even bother to get out of the car because there was nothing except the steps to look forward to, and my legs and lungs unfortunately can not handle it anymore.
For wedding photography, it is an absolutely epic site!"

The Legacy of the Rhodes Memorial Tea Room
Tragically, the tea room was destroyed in a fire, a significant event that impacted the memorial's appeal for some. This loss has left a void, and while the monument and views remain, the absence of the tea room means there's less of a reason for some to make a special trip solely to the memorial, unless they are hiking or specifically seeking the vista.
Despite the loss of the tea room, the memorial continues to draw visitors for its historical significance and the unparalleled panoramic views it offers of Cape Town.
Exploring the Trails and Natural Beauty
Popular routes include paths that lead further up Table Mountain, offering even more spectacular vistas. The landscape is characterized by fynbos vegetation, and on clear days, the views extend across the city, False Bay, and the surrounding mountain ranges. Remember to wear appropriate footwear, carry sufficient water, and inform someone of your hiking plans. The natural environment is a significant draw for many visitors, providing a refreshing escape from the urban bustle.
