What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the absolutely incredible, panoramic views from Simola Viewpoint, often describing them as breathtaking and worth the challenging journey. However, the steep and rough road requires a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4, and the lack of mobile signal adds a layer of caution for unprepared travelers.
"Really loved the views but make sure your vehicle has some ground clearance and can cope with the steepness of the road"
David
"Not the easiest to get to the top but amazing view. Really clean and well looked after. Better have a 4x4 or a rental :P"
Hendrik Strümpfer
"To get to this viewpoint is a mission….make sure you have a vehicle that can go off-roading. Please also not for majority of this journey there is NO signal. If you get stuck you will have to hike to a spot where there’s signal. We actually came across someone with a flat. Be careful! Unfortunately when we got to the top the weather decided to turn. It was super misty. But if we had been able to see it would have been amazing. Looking forward to going back when we come again."

Navigating the Ascent: Vehicle Requirements
The lack of mobile signal for a substantial part of the route adds another layer of caution. If you encounter trouble, you'll be on your own until you can reach an area with reception, which might involve hiking. This underscores the importance of ensuring your vehicle is in excellent condition and that you are comfortable with off-road driving. Some visitors have even encountered others with flat tires, highlighting the risks involved.
For those with the right vehicle, the drive can be an adventure in itself. The scenic route through the Knysna forest leading up to the viewpoint is also a pleasant experience, offering a beautiful prelude to the dramatic landscapes awaiting at the summit.
Maximizing Your View: Timing and Weather
To increase your chances of experiencing the full splendor, timing your visit is key. Many recommend visiting for sunrise, not only for the potentially clearer skies but also for the opportunity to be one of the few people there, enjoying a serene start to the day. This offers a more intimate connection with the landscape.
While clear afternoons can also provide stunning views, it's advisable to check the weather forecast before embarking on the journey. Being prepared for potential changes in weather, even on a seemingly clear day, is part of the adventure of visiting remote viewpoints. The effort to reach Simola Viewpoint is often rewarded with spectacular panoramas, making the planning and the drive worthwhile.
