What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Shingwedzi Rest Camp offers a tranquil safari experience with excellent wildlife viewing, particularly for lions and elephants, and a highly praised swimming pool. However, some visitors note concerns about camp security, potential heat and lack of shade in camping areas, and mixed experiences with restaurant food quality. The staff's friendliness and helpfulness are consistently highlighted as a major positive.
"Okt 2025 still very dry.
No leavy trees in camping area.
Camping in a tent with no shade in 40° C heat, is not a good option.
Swimming pool is great. Big & clean.
Restaurant has a huge open sitting area. After sunset the wind blows sand through the dining area.
Small inside dining area.
No rump available.
Had the toughest piece of T-bone of my life.
Surely the restaurant can deliver better quality meat."

"Big camp, our room b46 needs a bit maintenance but the service is excellent, prudence was fantastic and very friendly and welcoming to us in the morning and did an amazing job cleaning everything up, thank you. The baboons and monkeys are a bit of a nuisance but it all adds to the fun I think. The swimming pool onsite is excellent and well maintained. Game in the area decent, a lot of elephant especially. You can get out on the bridge nearby but during winter everything very dry. Fuel onsite and shop is a little bigger and has most things but expensive as always. We didn't try the restaurant but it looks good and it's alongside the river. We braai'd both nights outside our room and it was excellent, stars were out, it's amazing, i didn't realise at first but the utensils and everything is in the cupboard outside so I ended up buying stuff I didn't need. I like the camp could of maybe stayed longer. 🦒🐘🦌👌👍😊🇿🇦"

"The camp is one of the more unsafe of the Kruger camps - there is a secondary gate which is unmanned all day and left open with no electric grid etc to prevent animals wondering into the camp. We observed this every day of our stay. I'm including pictures of this for anyone wondering about it. It means you can't really walk around the camp without risking a lion or elephant wondering in.
We also noticed that no one updates the sightings boards- so what you see for yesterday stays for yesterday, the day before, the day before that- when you stay long enough you realise the boards aren't being updated.
The pool is very nice. The issue is the rubble around the pool - you can't lie on the ground or relax - Satara seems to be one of the few places with some grass around the pool. Again I attach photos of this.
We had an encounter with a Mozambican spitting cobra in the restaurant bathroom and the rangers arrived with no torch, sandals and no goggles to protect themselves. We were totally perplexed by the cavalier attitude displayed to safety.
The shop range is very limited compared to other camps."
