"Throughout its history, the church has undergone numerous renovations and reconstructions due to earthquakes and fires.
The initial construction of the Church of Santiago lasted from 1470 to 1745. The earthquakes in the Lorca area affected it, particularly the significant damage it suffered in the 1674 earthquake. Although restructuring and consolidation work was carried out in the mid-18th century, the church was in a state of ruin.
In 1745, a major reconstruction of the church began, completing it in 1780. A year later, in 1781, it was opened to the public."

"Beyond being a place of worship, it is a space that exudes history and art in every corner. Recently restored after the damage suffered, it appears splendid and full of details that deserve to be contemplated at length.
What strikes the most upon entering the High Altar area is, without a doubt, the magnificent sculpture of Saint James the Apostle. The titular image, a 20th-century work by José Gerique Roig, is captivatingly expressive and detailed. Seeing the pilgrim Apostle, with his characteristic attributes and accompanied by angels, is a visual catechesis. It is especially moving to learn that this sculpture was painstakingly restored after the earthquake, a symbol of Lorca's resilience.
But the church houses many more treasures. Be sure to admire the carving of the Immaculate Conception, also in the presbytery area, by Eduardo Espinosa Cuadros. Strolling through its side aisles, you will discover various charming altarpieces and chapels:
* In the transept, the altarpiece of the Virgin of Pilar with its angels.
* The Chapel of the Sacrament, with its paintings and the image of the Sacred Heart.
* The side chapels house images such as Saint Anthony of Padua, the Virgin and Child (an 18th-century altarpiece), Saint Anthony the Abbot (with a neoclassical altarpiece), and Saint Rita. Each tells a story and reflects popular devotion.
The Baroque architecture of the church, with its Latin cross layout and filtering light, creates an atmosphere of contemplation and awe. The gilded details that highlight the architectural elements against the white walls add solemnity without overwhelming it.
