Visitors rave about Whistle Inn Halt as a fantastic pub and stopover location, praising its friendly atmosphere, scenic surroundings, and excellent value. The Sunday roast and local ales are particular highlights, and its proximity to attractions like the Big Pit Museum makes it a highly convenient base for exploration. Some minor points include the need to book ahead and awareness of food service times.
"Fantastic. We booked a stop over, we arrived after 8pm and they had stopped taking food orders, it did look good coming out of the kitchen. I got stuck into the local ale, Hobby Horse, which I very much enjoyed a few pints of. The staff and others staying at the park up where friendly and we chatted the evening away.
The park up is barriered and you have use of the pub toilets overnight.
In the morning we walked to the Big Pit Colliery Museum which is amazing, an incredible look at an industry that powered the country. All those working there were so knowledgeable and happy to talk to us, really pleased we visited.
From there we walked back via the hill top path, stunning scenery.
Fyi, the pub doesn't serve the small plates on the weekend so we tucked into the chunky chips and dirty fries, which were amazing, before getting back on the road.
All in all, great pub, great stop over, stunning scenery."

"Great little campsite.
Lovely views and walks by the lakes. The pub seems popular with locals. Didn't have food as we were well equipped with food ourselves. 10 a night 👌🏻"
