However, the limited access (exterior viewing only, monthly guided tours) and lack of on-site facilities are frequently mentioned drawbacks.

"Walking Shoes required - A gem in the middle of nowhere!
After driving to a dead end private road we asked people walking from a field where the castle was and sure enough they were coming from there. It's the middle of nowhere with little signage or parking! Parking drama sorted we started our beautiful adventure on lovely afternoon, we enjoyed the fields, sheep and of course the cattle! Well worth the long drive to find. Local council should seriously consider providing parking, we don't mind paying!"

The History of Camber Castle

Camber Castle is a fascinating remnant of England's coastal defenses, originally built between 1512 and 1514 by King Henry VIII. Its primary purpose was to protect the important port of Rye from potential French invasion. The castle is a prime example of a Tudor artillery fort, designed to withstand cannon fire and house cannons itself. TikTokInstagram

Despite its strategic importance, Camber Castle's military significance waned over time. By the 17th century, the coastline had shifted, rendering the castle obsolete. It was eventually decommissioned and fell into disrepair, becoming the picturesque ruin we see today. Its remote location and the shifting sands of the estuary have preserved its unique character. Instagram

Today, Camber Castle is managed by English Heritage and is accessible primarily through guided tours. These tours offer invaluable insights into its construction, history, and the lives of those who served there. The monthly tours are a popular way for history enthusiasts to connect with this significant piece of English heritage. TikTok
